I don't know is this discussion the right place for this topic, but...

PLEASE try to find how to popularize A K Q J 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 symbols from the paid tourneys, because for the first day I was asked 3 times what these symbols mean and how someone can get these symbols.

From the readme.txt for the current version....

http://www.bridgebase.com/3.8.4/ministars.txt

expanded below

- Players can now win achievement awards for success in

pay tournaments that offer masterpoints using the ACBL

scale (right now that means ACBL and BBOLand)

These "awards" appear as symbols on members' user

profiles in the same way that the star symbol appears.

The new symbols, however, do not appear in the list of

names in the lobby or in the table list.

It should be noted that these symbols are NOT intended to

be any kind of "rating system" to measure a given member's

skill level. Having a lot of masterpoints is partly a measure

of skill, but it is also partly a measure of participation.

Here are the new symbols along with the definitions that

we are now using for them (which are not set in stone).

Only masterpoints earned on BBO count in terms of

the following awards:

A=the person who has won the most mps

K=the rest of the top 10

Q=the rest of the top 50

J=the rest of the top 100

10=over 1000 masterpoints

9=over 500 masterpoints

8=over 300 masterpoints

7=over 200 masterpoints

6=over 100 masterpoints

5=over 50 masterpoints

4=over 20 masterpoints

3=over 5 masterpoints

2=over 1 masterpoint

Our rules regarding the star symbol will not change as a

result of adding these new symbols.

Why? Who cares about masterpoints? They are a measure of how often you play in the ACBL tournaments.

I don't know who cares and who doesn't cares but there are many many players who don't know what these symbols mean. That's why I asked for any way to popularize them.

Hardly fair view.. once people find out it has something to do with ACBL rating points they may not be interested. But if they see the numbers and letters, and they don't know what it is, they are very curious.

The other posters here get a few questions a day. As a yellow, I get dozens of questions a day....

I've never been asked. But, it would seem simple enough to have a user profile option not to show the symbol. (Just as it ought to be an option to not have a flag.)

Tim

hi ,

Stephan and i dont have a symbol in our profile (i think) but given the fact that we are fairly know(and very often online) around BBO makes ppl come ask us cause they know us.

Think we both know where the symbols come from and how they are given, but a lot of folks do not and easy come towards us to ask:) therefore the proposal to get users on BBO know what it is and why :)

BTW, it is possible to not display your country, simply chose "other" in the list of flags/countrys.

IMHO, I think these masterpoint symbols are kind of silly. First of all, you only get them by playing in ACBL tourneys, so I suppose it's a way of promoting those games. And I don't have a problem with that!

So for those of us who don't plan to play in the ACBL tourneys, we will never get the recognition. Would other players think we are no good because we're not ranked?

And here's my wish item related to these "symbols", lol.

How about a flag that shows a player's nuisance factor? For example, like average time they take to bid and play a hand, and % of disconnects or being replaced when playing in tourneys, etc?? This might be a way to improve their behaviour on the site!

I don't care about these ACBL tourneys, but I hope for those who play them that there won't be an increase in cheating because of that ranking gadget. But I don't think anyone can stop this increase anyway...

There's a law in any competition with rankings (it's in human's nature):

Whenever there's a ranking, more and more people will cheat to raise in that ladder until they all get caught or the ladder is completely ruined.

To support this rule, here are some examples:

- ranking and tourneys in sports, some use forbidden medication to get better results

- online gaming: I used to play a lot of strategy games. Yuri's Revenge had a ladder, but after a while it was impossible to play a nice game because of all the cheaters. 90% of the top 50 were cheaters!

1.) This symbols are taken not only from ACBL, they are taken and from BBO LAND

2.) It's not an official classation.

3.)The theme of this post is "How to popularize the Masterpoint Symbols?".

Hi Frederick,

I don't think that Masterpoint Symbols will increase the number of cheaters. There were, are and will be classations - weekly for ACBL and monthly for BBO LAND, and the motive to cheat are the BB$ and ACBL Masterpoints.
