BPO 9 - Hand 6

1, maybe part of my strong club influences, but we also have 2 bullets, a couple of neat intermediates in the long suits to chunk it up, and both majors.

How forcing is 1NT here by BBF Standard rules? Can I pass with a minimum with no good rebid? I admit I didn't think of that when I bid 1 because a forcing 1NT lends itself to pass.

Why do people only refer to ZAR for opening bids?

4321 is more accurate for NT contracts and ZAR is more accurate for suit contracts. But when opening the bidding you generally don't know which it will be. You certainly don't on this hand. If you start off using 4321 and find a major fit you can switch to ZAR or whatever and catch up. If you open based on ZAR and find partner with a misfitting 12 or 13 you can never stop.

Otherwise use a hybrid method like 11-7-4-2-1 (which rates this a 10.8 so still a pass).

We all know that light openers can be quite effective at matchpoints, even if your style is that of sounder opening bids. The question is whether you're bold enough to fire the first shot and stand up for your choice or to wait for a better opportunity.

Opening 1 gives you a good shot at competing and preempts minors, whereas pass has the redeeming feature of being able to later show your hand at a convenient level, given you have the majors.

In practice, if you pass it may very well be your final move on this board and that won't score well (not many players opened the West hand at these colors), as 8-9 tricks are available in hearts. Regardless of our beliefs, opening 1 here would have worked better than pass and it gets thus the better score.
