Bingo tourneys

After approximately 20 bingo tourneys, I thought it would be nice to give some feedback.

First of all I did know the format already, I played it once (offline) but then we should get particular scores (i.e. +620, +200, -50) instead of games in this version.

Since I played already quite a lot bingo tourneys, I cannot deny anymore that it is fun to play, mostly because it is a different way to play the same game. The very fast pace (15 hands in 25 minutes is doable) and competitive element of this game make me register over and over again. That said I don't really believe I keep on playing at this rate. There are disadvantages to this format. Deciding to play 4 hearts in a 5-2 fit over 3 NT is ok to me, but passing a forcing bid from partner feels a bit like cheating. Playing 2 spades, when you could make a slam isn't bridge anymore for me. Also knowing you have the strongest hand makes it relatively easy to play a low contract (i.e. 2 diamonds, 3 clubs, 2 spades) by just opening or overcalling weak. Maybe slams (and games) should be extra rewarded, but I don't see fast how.

A came across a little presentational bug (but didn't play since this afternoon (CET), so it can already be solved), and that had to do with the restarts when opponents made a game. If you need 1200 points for a restart it shows only 700, but making a non vulnarable slam doesn't help. It seems to me it always shows a number between 500 and 990 when needing more then 500 points.

But it is great to see new features and I'll keep on playing this format once in a while (I think).

What do you mean? Can you detail this a litte? If you're on negative score more than - 1000 points? If you are on positive score you always need < 500 till next redeal and the counter changes on the Redeal button every 500 points.

I mean the negative score more than -1000. But i think the problem is the same if you are on a positive score and you have used redeals.

Examples make it more clear I think:

starting with 500 needed for a redeal

Opponents make 4 hearts vulnarable, so you need 500+620=1120. It shows only 620 for the next redeal.

Then you go down 3 (vulnarable, doubled), so you need 1120+800=1920. But the software shows 920. Making a nonvulnarable slam in hearts leads to +980. You could expect a redeal, if you just look at the screen, because it says needed 920, but in fact tou are needing 1920-980=940. 940 is showed.

I just tested if it still incorrect and it is. I made a screenshot of the card history and added two columnns, one for score needed and one for shown score needed for a restart.

I tried a couple of Bingo tourney yesterday. I won the first one I entered, so that certainly gave me a good impression. :) It's an interesting format, but I think I could tire of it pretty quickly.

I didn't notice the above problem because I generally display the leaderboard, not my table. There's a counter in the Redeal button that says how many redeals I have available. I was never in the hole enough to worry about how far I am from getting redeals, but maybe I was just lucky.

I compared bidding low with rubber bridge above, but there's one big difference. When you play RB, partner also knows the strategy of bidding low when you have a part score below the line. But GIB doesn't know Bingo strategy, so it will raise you even when you don't want it to. So you sometimes have to make tricky bids to hit the contract on the bingo board.

I share this evaluation. I've tried it four times, and at no time I was worried that I would not finish my Bingo in time. But perhaps I'm not the right target group, as apparently most people don't make it to the Bingo in time. It certainly is an interesting idea.

As with the race tourneys, you have to learn new strategies. The people who do poorly in these variants are the ones who just "play bridge".

I'm sure that's right. I just logged in here to say I've had a blast playing the Bingo. I started a few days ago, and have managed to place in nearly every one I join, so I think I've got the hang of it. What I like about it is "cheating" the system to get a needed score. But that Robot on the other side of the table can be infuriating at times. Have to remember "it" can't understand I only need THREE spades, LOL.

This is a really neat online Bridge community, and I'm thankful it's here. Now, I just need to up my game to get competitive and play in some REAL tourneys!

Edit: well, I wonder if someone reads these posts! Today, it seemed the algorithm was set much more aggressive toward the E/W hands competing. The game seemed harder. Maybe I shouldn't have said anything! :)

Welcome to forums Coldwarvet. :)

We didn't really change Bingo. However!! (and this is huge), robots were improved last Thursday. Was that around when you sensed a difference?

Every robot improvement makes them smarter. Could that be it?

Glad you enjoy Bingo T in general. :)

Yes, around Thursday, I saw a big difference, primarily in how competitive E/W was becoming. I just finished a Bingo match where East had, by a good bit, the strongest hand - I thought S. always had strongest hand? The thing I really liked about Bingo was, by playing fast, (not necessarily well :)) one could see a lot of hands and often manage to guide North into the contracts needed. It was fun. Now, I find most of my time is spent competing with E/W, who, when they win the contract, seem to be programmed to "stall" and "burn clock." Not so much fun.

Anyway, love the site - having a great time, for the most part, and trying to learn all these new bidding systems. Well, new to me, anyway. Thanks!

S always has the most, or tied for most "high card points" in a best hand tournament.

High card points doesn't always equate to the best hand at the table, since distribution and type of points and whatever all counts too.

Thanks for clarifying that. I've begun playing the Robot Races lately - more my style of fun! Those boards play so quickly you can't follow the tricks!
