who has lost their marbles?

South doesn't really have an opening bid, assuming fairly standard agreements. I also don't like south's 1NT call, which should imply a balanced hand. It's true that occasionally you have to "fudge" a 1NT rebid with an off shape hand, but with opponents bidding (as here) there's no reason not to pass 1.

North's bidding seems pretty normal. Trying for 3NT instead of 4 (say via 3) is possible and could win the board opposite some opener hands, but I don't think bidding game in your strong six-card major after partner promised a balanced hand with enough values for game is really a mistake.

correction to diagram - south was in 2ND seat, east passed originaly (I need my lin convertor fixed)

South is insane

The opening was very light

The rebid was terrible flawed

It is a good lesson that when they overcall 1S on this auction, you should USUALLY just pass with a hand you would have rebid 1N with. For instance with a 3235 12 count, I would just pass. To bid 1N you want spades well stopped positionally, and a good hand. Basically they gave you 2 free bids, double which people utilize as support, and pass which people forget to utilize. It is dangerous to bid in this auction, you might have 12 opposite 5 and no fit, you might get doubled etc.

And of course when you have an unbalanced hand you would have rebid 1S with, you should also pass. You don't need to lie and show 2 hearts since pass is available. Even if you have like 4135 and a 16 count, you should typically pass. The auction 1C p 1H 1S p p X p 2N is an interesting one, I think that it shows something like that.

After the opening bid you were destined to get too high. That is normal when partner has a misfitting 13, get used to it if you want to open hands like this. Obviously you have some compensation, but this is the biggest downside. Life in the fast lane.

Echo all the comments. South does not have an opening bid and the 1NT bid can only be described as ridiculous.

More evidence of what a friendly place the Beginner/Intermediate Forum is!

There is a time and a place for "friendly".

This posting asked a specific (and loaded) question.

I think that its reasonable to provide a specific, if forceful response.

Simply put, you shouldn't stand up and wave a flag asking "Am I stupid?" if you don't want to hear the response. (Please note: I don't necessary think either bid was stupid, however, the 1C opening seems misguided and the 1NT rebid is deeply, deeply flawed)

FWIW,

1. I've played with Kathryn on numerous occasions

2. I'd be shocked if she were the one who either opened 1 or rebid 1N

South. I can certainly live with the 1 opener, there are no rebid problems, and this seems like a decent hand... The 1NT call was the problem, 1N showed a good opener here since pass was available. South has a clear pass over 1, although it may not affect the final contract or result much. Unfortunately this is a problem you have to deal with when openings these types of hands: When partner doesn't have a fit, things often will go South very quickly (pun intended).
