"T" for 10

Recommended Posts

All the other honor cards are designated with a letter so why not tens.

Using "10" actually has caused me to miscount the distribution,

because it's the only card that takes 2 characters and normally I

just scan for distribution. If everyone doesn't like it, then make

it configurable.

How do you propose the software not changing comments like "it's a 100% line" to "it's a T0% line"?

I presume p_t_red meant in hand and deal diagrams and I agree with him.

Perhaps posters should make declarer West rather than South because

  • in single-dummy play it takes up less vertical space
  • in auctions it seems more natural

+1 for wanting to see T and not 10.

A configuration option for the diagrams would be nice; but if there isnt an option I would have (very strongly) preferred T. Having number of characters not equal to number of cards is a BIG program for some of us.

No need to worry about "100% -> T0%" since there isnt any need for text replacements, only for how it is shown on the screen.

Some countries have Kn for the Jack, that must be pretty annoying! Is this also programmed in BBO?

Next you will be asking for a "D" in the deck. BTW I do support the T instead of 10 in deal diagrams. It took me a long time to change and is actually a reversion of position for me. I used to hate the T. :)

While I realize the people talking about trailing 0s and Kns and Ds were mocking those of us from whom two digits for one card causes a cognitive dissonance.... as a programming point, it would be absolutely trivial to have an array

cardlabel(2)="2"

cardlabel(3)="3"

...

cardlabel(9)="9"

cardlabel(10)="T" or "10" as you prefer

cardlabel(11)="J" or "V" or "B" as you prefer

etc.

It's something I already do in my own typesetting software, as an easy way to accomodate both T-vs-10 and spaces between card names (K 10 7 4 3" vs KT743 vs K10743). Surprised it isnt semi-standard practice for software intended to be used internationally. "Language packs" for Windoze applications do essentially the same thing, storing the text for every button/menu item/etc as a variable that depends on one's chosen country.

Agree that the programming effort rates to be trivial. But there are reasons to strive to limit the number of options in general:

- the more options the more confusing the option setting screen

- some users using T and some using 10 will also mean that they will tend to use those labels in chat and forum posts (and obviously when communicating screen shots). This could cause a bit of confusion.

That said I am still in favor of making the T an option as some people feel strongly about it and I don't think the drawback is huge in this case. But I can see why Fred doesn't automatically honor any request for more options.

KDB and RDV is the sort of thing that in years past would have been hidden in an editable .ini file instead of offered on the regular options menu, maybe :) But extensive and sometimes-confusion customizations are not such odd things in software, thinking of openoffice and firefox addons and stuff.

As for the forum posts, since most of us are posting hands with links rather than hard-coding them... it seems that they would either all be displayed in the default form, or (depending how smart the applet is) appear on each person's machine according to their own saved preferences.

Are we? That's too bad, it means noone will be able to understand these threads half a year from now.

I do wish that myhands had a "convert to forum markup" option, though.
