The bidding is what it is. I'm sure some will like the 1NT opener and some will not.

Anyway, the lead is the 3. The declarer asks and is told that they lead 4th best. Do you play the J hoping that the lead is from KQx3 or do you play low hoping that it's from K10x3 or Q10x3 and that East will pop the other honour? Are the two options even close?

PS The K is offside so you need to get this right. :)

If I had a total and absolute novice on my right, I'd go low (edit). Novice players don't like to underlead KQ's, and a true novice will always pop Q or K from any holding including KT.

Against anyone that has played for some period of time, play the J.

Why would East play an honour from Q9 or K9 unless they are a beginner?

Because they have an agreement to lead second from 10xxx, and they "know" that with Ax you'd always play the jack from dummy, so the only remaining possibility, from East's point of view, is that West has AKxx or AQxx.

why are you answering this near 6 year old post now. Is the OP still a member of BBO? Hopefully they have integrated rule of 11 (etc) into their subconcious and the correct play is automatic both my declarer and East.

Huh? The post isn't even six hours old.
