I've recently been involved in an email discussion about the sequence 2-(3)-5 and other similar auctions. There seem to be three approaches to the 5 bid:

 

(1) It's an advance sacrifice on a weak hand. It invites opener to bid 6 over 6 if his hand is suitable.

(2) It's just "to play" and could be a wide range of hand types. Opener is always expected to pass regardless of whether opponents compete further.

(3) It's a slam try asking for something specific (usually a club control); if the opponents bid over 5 then a forcing pass would be on.

 

Would any of these approaches be alertable under ACBL rules?
