What is max for 1H after 1C p p ?

Recommended Posts

As mike mentioned, many people play strong jump overcalls in the passout seat, and if so this hand is plenty good enough for 2H.

If for some reason that's not an option for you, under the "add a king in balancing seat" rule of thumb I'd call this hand quite a bit too good for 1H and start with X (following with 3H over 2S, which partner ought to take as forcing).

It's important to remember partner will never go crazy in spades if you double with a hand like this in passout seat; he didn't overcall 1S (or 2S...or 3S...). We know he has some points so it's impossible that he will bid like 4S over our double in passout seat. Not really a comment on this hand, just saying, I think people in general worry too much about doubling offshape with a lightish hand in balancing seat.

This is true, however the opponents may have a good spot in spades. Not that this has any influence on the double / 1 / 2 discussion.

I would bid 2.

The actual hands hand were from a online pickup game. I had the spade hand and found it a little embarrasing to see partner make 200. I knew my red quacks were good cards. Just didn't imagine partner having such a good hand for a balancing 1H.

Well, you gave preference to one of his suits, and he bid the other one again anyway, and in such a way as to force you to the four-level if you want to insist on diamonds. That has got to show a pretty good hand...

Also, LOL @ the guy who couldn't bid 2 but then suddenly came in with 3.

Well it is totally your fault. What happened and why did you not bid the totally obvious 1S? (a comment that was deemed unwarrented in B/I forum was removed by the adminstrator)

The only "totally obvious" call with 5241 shape is "director, please". But if you add a heart I'll agree with a 1 overcall. I wouldn't demand it in the B&I forum, however.

You hold

T AKTxxx AKxx xx

and it goes 1 club pass pass ?

Do you re-open with double or 1 heart?

If you re-open with a double what do you bid over partners 2 spades ?

If you reopen with 1 heart how much more do you need to change to double?

I like a 1S overcall fwiw

I don't like a 1 overcall either and would prefer to back in later if warranted.

The answer as mentioned is for your partner to balance with 2 which I play as intermediate, ie. a hand that would open 1 then jump to 3 next. They are so rare that it could easily be mis-interpreted in a pick up BBO game and I wouldn't do it.

However, when partner removed to 3 hearts, I think he showed a 6-4 with ambitions and you owed him a raise on the working fit in the reds and especially on the stiff club.

Backing in later is a common beginner's error. You make life far too easy for the opponents. With the 5th club this is an even MORE obvious overcall. Very poor to pass!

If you regard an amusing quote by Oscar the Owl in this manner, then I feel sorry for you. By the way, I wasn't "insinuating" anything, it was a clear statement that the initial pass was very poor call. If you regard with hostility comments made in this light, you will never learn anything.
