Take-out double

All Red, bidding goes:

1 X 3 Pa

Pa ???

Assuming 3 is pre-emptive, what do you need to have for a 4 bid here? How about for another double?

Then, after:

1 X 3 Pa

Pa 4 4 ???

What would you bid with:

98xx

Txx

Jxxx

Kx

if he bids 4, i will bid 5 with this. As Fluffy said sometimes strong hand only needs a support for a self sufficient game or slam.

With a suit like AKQJxx and a lot of side beans, people count tricks and open 2, or bid the game/slam whatever they think they can make themselves. But they cant do that with a suit like AKxxxx(x). And sides are almost covered. All he needs is a freaking xxx(x) support.

For example Kx void AKxxxxx AKQx or A x AKxxxxx AKQx and of course he aint gonna make another double with this. (in your example he can't have K so make it stiff Ace and AKQ , i was giving example in general)

I am a very huge "support with support" fan :) I would raise to 5 w/o K and J too.

EDIT: I just saw RHO bid 4 so most people will bid 5 anyway, "if not make, it is good save" logic. I would bid 5 w/o 4 from RHO.

I think RHO is rebidding hearts because he has at least five of them so partner is probably void in hearts.

Also, partner has said he has a long diamond suit with a hand too good to overcall so I would give partner at least 17-18 hcp.

Now consider that partner could hold something like: S Ax H -- D AKQxxxx C Axxx or the equivalent so our side can possibly make 6D even though we only have just about half of the deck in hcp. So I think bidding just 5D without thinking about slam is very conservative. I would bid 5C to show a key useful card for partner. I can hardly have a long club suit as I didn't bid clubs earlier and I can hardly be looking for a club fit at the five level since partner didn't promise club support when he bid 4D. Partner may not be able to bid a cold slam in all cases but at least you did your best to help him.

IMO, After

(1) _X (3) _P;

(_P) ??

  • _X just shows a slightly stronger hand than originally promised e.g. Axxx x AKxx AQxx
  • 4 shows a powerful hand with a long suit e.g. Ax K AQxxxxx AJx

Now after

(1) _X (3) _P;

(_P) 4 (4) ??

5 = 10, 6 = 8, 4 = 6, _P = 4, _X = 1.
