Bbradley62
Sorry, but there are so many interesting explanations in this auction... [hv=myhand=M-21423591-1292367601]400|300[/hv] The explanation of 3♣ is that it shows a concentration of values in ♣ (at least 6 of the 15 8421 points). Apparently, it says absolutely nothing about shape (because it's still only 3+D) and absolutely nothing about strength (because it's still 11-21HCP and 12-22 total points). The explanation of 3♠ is "Solid S; maximum -- 2-D; solid 6-card S; 17+ total points". Is there a definition of "solid"? Can it be KQJT98? Why should this bid show a 2-D? Surely we wouldn't raise D with three of them when opener has only shown three of them. In what way is this "maximum" if it's 17+ total points but the 2♠ bid was also 17+ total points? 4♦ is GIB's infamous Help Suit Slam Try. 4♥ says it shows 8+ in 8421 points. Could it not be first-round control in the form of a void? Does it say anything about diamond help, since it's following the HSST? What is the purpose of 5♠? The explanation is that it shows 2+S (presumably enough to play opposite South's six solid), with 5- 8421 points in S. We also know that North has 14-22 total points, and South has 19+, so we should certainly know that we're going to slam. What would 4♠ have been instead of 5♠, since we shouldn't be signing off there with 14+ opposite 19+? 6♣ says it shows 8+ in 8421 points. Echoing the 4♥ bid above, it seems reasonable that it could also be first-round control in the form of a void. 7♠: It's not clear to me that Roger's rule should be absolute, but it is clear to me that GIB cannot pull 6NT to 7 of a suit unless he knows for sure that his side has first-round control of all four suits.
