nige1
I think it would be good if it were not possible to hide the fact that a post had been edited. I don't mean for the previous content to be visible, just the little clip about the edit having occurred. I often edit my posts but agree that the edit-clip should be automatic. Echognome
Especially when a poster says "I agree with everything that XXX said above." If the person were ever referring to me, I'd be tempted to edit my post!

hotShot
I often edit my posts but agree that the edit-clip should be automatic. I would hate that, I usually discover a typo while waiting for the message to be delivered.
nige1
I would hate that, I usually discover a typo while waiting for the message to be delivered. So do I. Often several. Sometimes I notice worse mistakes. But so what? The edited-line is just a harmless time-stamp for your last change.
matmat
I would hate that, I usually discover a typo while waiting for the message to be delivered. It's not about the typos, i make enough of them myself (and post-edit). It's the editing for content that make other people's responses look out of place or totally wrong. I make a lot of typo type corrections and like that the post is not marked as edited as a result. But, another forum where I post automatically adds the edit line and I've gotten used to it. mycroft
My problem is that the edited by...time is effectively useless. So, is it "rewritten"? Is the contract added because we missed it? Did he delete the 14th card from the hand? There was a site where, when you edited a post, it would note it; but you could add an edit reason comment in the post. My personal ethics say that I never use the "edit tag" - if it's just a "fix the spelling/grammar" issue, seeing "edited by" is going to have people spend too much time trying to figure out what; if it's important enough for people to care, I should add the edit reason tag explicitly (which I did today, a 14-card hand). But that's just my personal.

But that's just my personal. This would be perfect, unfortunately I've see people change their posts substantially without mentioning it, making subsequent thread content look ridiculous. I often edit posts for corrections, add a thought that occurred later, etc. Maybe the solution would be to have some sort of a grace period? (30mins? hour?) During that time no edit line would be added. Also, looking at some of the moderator edits around (mostly to remove usernames to protect the guilty), it is possible to have a comment in the edit field. Echognome
You can make sure your "I agree with XXX" posts are not misunderstood by quoting what you agree with. As an aside, I really agree with Matmat on most things.Which can lead to a different source of problem...
gwnn
editing after the grace period should be punished by death, or at least a substantial fine.
