Italian Championships - Angelini team disqualified

I do understand what hubris means, but I don't understand what you mean. Who do you think was displaying it, the team that played ineligible players, or the team that filed the challenge?

I'd guess kfay is implying that the team that was DQed was aware of a regulation, disregarded it thinking they could strongarm/sweettalk/wiggle their way out of whatever problems arose?

Precisely.

I mean... how can you have a captain with such a record as well as some of the top bridge players in the world and not be aware of the rules for the competition in which you are playing? To me it seems that Angelini likely was aware or suspected but who would put up a fuss over having such an exciting team in the competition as well as challenge one of the 2 most powerful bridge personalities in Italy?

I dont expect teams to be able to know when or when not to challenge other teams qualifications for an event before the first round. That is an unreasonable burden to put on the other teams. If you dont do it before the first round it is too late, that is unreasonable.

As a side note in the USA in some sports teams have lost their Nat championship months or a year later after the fact because of ineligible players.

Fantoni, who was in the Angelini team, made some comments on the affair near the end of an interview with the same magazine.

For nige1's benefit, the background to the complaint and at least one reason for delay (it was eventually given to the Italian Olympic Committee by the bridge authorities) is covered in a previous post on the Neapolitan Club site.

Thanks Paul. It seems the teams behaved faultlessly. Administrators must make quicker decisions, in such cases. It is ridiculous and unfair on everybody to wait until the competition is over.

Just got back from Orlando. Discussed this with Fantoni at length. They asked the Federation well before the event and got an email back confirming participation was ok. What else can you do? You ask, it's ok, you play - and you get disqualified...?

So how does Italian nat. bridge org. respond...or are they silent?

Even more important I assume that everyday italian bridge players own/control italy bridge...what are they doing....silent?? nothing??

The owners/members of Italy bridge need to step up and take control or take full blame.
