Their leading style is ostensibly 4th from an honour and top or second from small cards depending on holding. The first trick goes 6, 3, 10, Q. At trick 2 you lead the diamond jack which is covered by the king and ace. At this point I decided to guess the clubs, as I didn't want to mess around and possibly go off more than one. Reasonable? Keep in mind that these opponents aren't going to give count or anything dumb, and are also quite capable of false carding on opening lead etc. What inferences are available to pick up clubs, and who do you play for the Queen? nigel_k Posted December 2, 2010 Report Share Posted December 2, 2010 I also played this in 6NT on the same lead and took a second diamond finesse because I back myself to usually get clubs right if I have enough information about the distribution and I guessed that the value of that information would be worth more than the matchpoints I might salvage by avoiding going off more than one. Run C9.I think you are taking this the wrong way, if RHO has ♣Q it is more likelly that ♦10 is onside so you should finese through west. You can infer that if LHO doesn't have ♦10, then RHO has at least 4 diamonds because LHO with 4 diamonds to the king might not cover the Jack. This agains calls for finesing west. I'd love to get to a position where east wins ♣Q but its endplayed with only diamonds left but don't find any. So I'd just finese west. West chose to lead from small cards in ♠. Without ♣Q they would also have had a choice of leading from a similar holding in ♣. With ♣Q no such choice would have been available. OK, it is a pretty weak inference when you have opened 1♣ since most would prefer to lead ♠ with a choice, anyway. But it might be enough to tip the balance.
