mrmarkwang
White VS White, You have following hand: ♠A8♥KJT985♦AQT♣Q5 What will you bid at 4th seat?
ArtK78
1♥. While others may disagree, I believe that the standard definition of a 2♥ opening in 4th seat is a hand that would open 1♥ and rebid 2♥. This hand is too good for that (admittedly, not by much). I would prefer to open 1♥ and rebid 2♥ to show a better hand. Without the ♣Q, I would open 2♥. It is that close. 1NT is out of the question with 6 good hearts. mikeh
assuming it has gone p p p, 1♥ and I don't understand the reason this is a problem. Sure, one can create action by 1N, and one may have a problem on the next round, after the pedestrian 1♥....but that would be true whether we opened in 1st, 2nd or 3rd chair...this is a hand that fits uncomfortably in a standard-based method....but that's no excuse for masterminding a la 1NT. han
Only two spades and my partners open light in first seat. I'd probably pass it out.
gwnn
OP is new so I should point out that han is joking.

awm
2H in 4th.I have a 6 card suit with a 1H opener in the 1st 3 seats. What is the range of this 2♥ bid for you? If it's really any hand that opens 1♥ in the first three seats and has a six-card suit, that's like 11-20? It seems difficult for partner to know what to do over such a call. For me, a 4th seat 2♥ shows a six-card suit and roughly the worst hand I would actually open in fourth chair. This implies a range of something like 8-12 hcp, and partner should conclude that we cannot make a game (12 hcp opposite a passed hand usually is no game) unless he has a great fit for hearts. The given hand is way better than 12 hcp, and I would certainly open 1♥.
gwnn
anyway, I never do it at the table so at least here on the forums I will try 1N and buckle up! woo hoooo
akwoo
anyway, I never do it at the table so at least here on the forums I will try 1N and buckle up! woo hoooo I wouldn't open this one 1N. Place partner with almost any non-fitting 10 count possible and we are still fairly likely to be broken in a black suit before setting up hearts. I'm much more likely to open 1N with Qx, KQJTxx, AQx, Qx.
Siegmund
There are enough tricks to open about 2 1/2 hearts in 4th seat, but you need some agreement about what type of hand does that so partner knows how to proceed. My style is to use the 4th seat jump openings for "just look at your aces and trumps and decide how high to raise me" hands - and on this deal my partner would undervalue his kings badly, and quite likely cause us to miss a game we might have found after, for instance, 1H followed by 3H. We make a similar distinction when the other side preempts between e.g. (2h) 3S and doubling-then-rebidding-spades.

Not a preemptive hand.... 14-16Some I know play 13-15 .

kenberg
Imo a 4th hand opening of 2M should say: I am sure the hand should be played in M and if my partner has about one-third of the outstanding points I expect to be able to take 8 tricks. Generally I hope, and to some extent expect, that my bid will be followed by three passes. IN particular, I like my suit to be something like KQJTxx. There is a pretty good chance that this will yield exactly five tricks. If I have an outside ace, and then QJx somewhere, I should be able to bring in eight tricks most of the time if partner produces a not totally useless dummy. As far as opening the given hand with 1NT, it will be brilliant when it works and nuts the rest of the time. For example when partner transfers to spades on Jxxxx/ Qxx/xx/Kxx. It might make, but really I would prefer to be in hearts.
