Why do you or do you not double?

Since my second pass (the one on 1NTx) isn't alerted, I guess it's a suggestion to play. Partner bid 2♣ exposing a psych, so why would I ever bid anything other than pass? :blink:

If strong, it's more likely to be an outright psyche, if weak, it's more likely to be just a slight bend.

My guess is you are playing a weak notrump. RHO had a good lead (solid or semisolid hearts) and not the normal quota of points for his double. Also partner might have psyched. Double is really bad here. It is for partner to decide whether to sacrifice in 5♣. You have given enough encouragement.

I don't think partner has psyched necessarily. He could have upgraded a 13- or 14- count with 5 or 6 clubs. It would be common to bid 2C on such a hand.

 

Either way we have a clear pass.

Don't really understand why this hand is posted. Don't know why we would ever consider doubling here when we don't even have a certain defensive trick. Partner has opened 1NT sure, and he can see his own hand too. I would have bid 2D however over the penalty double.

I would be happy to put down my hand as dummy in 1NTX. It's possible that they have 7 quick tricks, but it is more likely that 1NTX will make.

 

However, if my LHO passes then I wish I had bid 2D, especially if the hand comes back to me at 2H or 2S.

Assuming you have been given accurate info, and you trust your partner's 15-17 range, this is a clear dbl I think. Lead a trump, and we'll hold them to 8 tricks.
