hotShot
Can you remember the first version of Windows?Around here it was Windows 1.03 and you had to buy a mouse and connect it to your computer to use it.This was a big deal because: "Real experts don't need mice..." What was the first version you used?
helene_t
It was in 1988, I think version 1.something. It ran on my 8088 computer although version 3 would run on 386 only. The reason for using windows in 1988 was that the "Balance of Power" game required it. I thought of Windows as a graphical subroutine library and I wasn't aware if any other software than the BoP game ran on it. It would take another four years before I started using it for other purposes than BoP. In the meantime, I used the graphical environment manager (GEM) under DOS and CP/M quite a lot. We started using it at work in 1986.

mgoetze
This was a big deal because: "Real experts don't need mice..." I can use a computer just fine without a mouse. The first version of Windows I ever used was 3.0. The last version of Windows which was installed on a computer belonging to me was Windows 2000. Fluffy
I remember running an old version of windows but quickly quitting because it wasn't helpful for anything, I got everhing I wanted on the C:\> prompt. First version I actually used was windows 98 directly.
mtvesuvius
The earliest version I used was Windows 1995 (the year before I was born ;)), I just recently found a few CDs that I used to play when I was younger, none were compatible beyond Windows 98... Bleh.
blackshoe
When I was at Fleet Training Group San Diego in the mid 80s, the Commodore called me in to his office one day and said "I understand you know how to spell "computer"". When I allowed that I did, he said "we have 30 of them. Figure out what to do with them." So the first thing I did was go talk to the CPO who had been in charge of them. He showed me a closet full of boxes of software, including 45 copies of Windows 1.0. I asked him why this software wasn't installed on the computers. He said "Have you ever *seen* Windows 1.0?" I admitted I had not, so he started it up on the computer on his desk. Then we went to lunch. When we came back, it had just finished booting. Okay, I exaggerate. Slightly. The darn thing was dog slow doing anything. Some time later, I ran into the VP for Federal Marketing of Zenith Corporation, which had written the contract under which all this hardware and software was sold to the military (joint AF/Navy contract, as I recall). When I mentioned Windows, he said "Yeah, I should apologize for that. It should never have been in that contract."

Gerben42
My parent's first desk top had something called Geoworks Ensemble installed. Somehow this worked way better than Windows :)But then more and more Windows 95 stuff came out and we switched to that. Meanwhile, my dad's company PC was an Apple Macintosh.
