rebid question

Recommended Posts

endless discussion....

I PICK 3H BUT.....I understand many others pick other...

I assume pard knows we open on crap..s0 3h is still crap....:)

A 12 count with a decent suit and 4 controls is crap? Ye Gods and little fishes!

Anyway, our style is to bid 2S on this, so that is what I do.

This is the kind of problem you wish you had more often -- a hand with the right shape and stoppers to be perfect for 2NT, AND support for partner's hearts (1S-p-2H does promise 5.) Pure style question which one you prefer - or, perhaps, a question of whether you trust your own declarer play more than partner's.

I daresay hog's will be the only vote for the 2S rebid.

No, Hog's bid is reasonable if he chooses to raise but lacks the values to do so (requires more than minimum.) Not the way I play, but some do.

Yeah, 3 if it doesn't show extras and 2 if it does.

If 2NT shows 12-14 or 18-19, I can see a rationale for bidding 2NT and reserving 3 for more shapy hands. Maybe 3 would encourage partner too much.

If you allow 3 with this hand I think you need some gadget like (un)serious 3NT to sort out the strength before committing to slam. Other ways of avoiding slams when both partners have a balanced 12-count would be non-mandatory cuebids or last train.

That said, to avoid messy auctions where nobody knows which 4-level bids are natural and which are cuebids, support-with-support has a lot of going for it.

I know some players who show weakness by fast arrival and would rebid 4 with this hand. While this is not for experts (4 is better used as a picture bid showing 5422 with weak doubletons; with this hand you want to keep the option of playing 3NT open and you want to reserve space for cuebidding), bidding 4 with this hand and reserving 3 for stronger hands is probably the easiest style I know of.

Siegmund what you clearly don't seem to understand is that as 2H is forcing, some players prefer to limit their hand. A 3H bid would show more values for me and clearly for many others.

In order, I like 2nt, 3 then 2 but all 3 are legitimate style wise.

I don't think 3 shows extras in 2/1.

The 2 heart bid is forcing all right but to game. You can bid 3 hearts followed by 4 hearts and keep a possible 3nt contract in play if partner can head there. Not tough to reject any slam tries.

Or you can bid 2nt and go back to 4 hearts if pard steers you away from notrump.

We have a rule that if you misplace 1 spot card, your bid is acceptable. Not correct maybe but an OK judgement.

I had a small heart in with my clubs.

snipped

I think what you should say is that 3H doesn't show extras in the 2/1 style that YOU prefer. I can point you to a number of people who play 2/1 methods where a raise shows a good 15 points at a min.
