You know you want to

Pass, I have the wrong number of Hearts, I don't like the fact that I have the Q, my AJ is in front of the opener, so I am not going to bid 5 -- heck, the Q is probably "wasted" in that partner is probably bidding a five card suit so we don't really need the value of the queen.

To the hog... partner with a "bad hand" would pass over 2's, so he has something. His 3 was a free-bid after all (does anyone still use the term "free-bid" in this LOTT world?).

5. Probably an overbid, but opponents seem to have very few HCP, so I am hoping that RHO has long hearts for his bidding. If partner has one heart we want him to have at least the K and a top spade. Or perhaps he has AK and out, perhaps he is void in hearts. There seem to be a few chances.

It would help to know if we are playing Good/Bad here.

Silly comment, not only would OP have mentioned it, but the fact that partner bid 3[DI r/w means he doesn't have junk.

OTOH, it would help to know the form of scoring.

Even sillier comment. If the form of scoring were relevant, the op would have mentioned it.

The form of scoring matters almost always, even if not stated in the OP, nice try at a comeback though :)

Sounds like we have the balance of points here. I would dble. Don't see 5d as being likely to be a good contract, and I dont think 790 is the end of the world. Partner should have a decent hand here - expecting 7 HCP at least when his diamonds are so poor. If he has a weak hand with 7 diamonds I am happy to pay out :)

Dislike Passing as I feel this is our hand and even if you dble and it makes, it will make oppos wary of biddng too aggressively. I think 300 is a very likely outcome if you dble. Even though it feels like we have no tricks, if partner has eg both black suit kinds they might not have many tricks either - does not seem like opener is particularly unbalanced.

EDIT: also, if partner is very distributional, then he might not sit the second dble, if he is say 4-0-6-3 or something, he will bid 4S, so it seems like dble has more than one way to win.

I would bid 5 and even if the opponents continue to 5 I am not at all sure I would double. My guess is that the hand will take ten tricks in diamonds and at most three tricks in defense against 4. Perhaps someone is bidding on air, but my guess is that they are bidding on shape.

Anyway, 5. I have been wrong before.

Passing seems crazy - how is partner to know I have an 18-count. I would bid 5. If my opponents were known to be crazy maybe I would double. Partner really should not have cheese for a free 3 bid at IMPs with a bad suit, so I think this should have play, and even if it doesn't maybe they'll believe me and save if they're fav.
