What do you open and why? In a fairly standard 2/1 context.

1♠. With 5-6 in touching suits, you ask yourself "is this hand worth a reverse?" Though you may shade the HCP with this shape, 11 just isn't enough.

1♥, because they are longer and the A of trump is just a missing trump, while a side suit that misses AK is harder to reach and use as source of tricks.

If we have a ♥ fit, there is no need to mention the ♠.

Depends so much on partnership agreement.

 

I've played a style where 1S-then-3H promised specifically 5-6.

Absent that type of agreement, I am settling for 1H.

I normally open 1♠ rebid 4♦ over 1NT to show 5-6.

 

As much as I like opening 1♠ on 5-6 hand this one has many quality issues that lean towards 1♥ as pointed out by hotshot. IMO its close.

 

With m regular partner I'd open 1♠, but I think with a pickup one 1♥ is ok.

1♥ planning on rebidding 2♥ over a forcing 1NT. We may miss a 5-3♠ fit, of course. IF partner makes a 2-over-1 response instead, I will change horses and bid and rebid ♠'s to show the 5-6 hand.

Agree, although, if you move the Ace of clubs to hearts or to spade, I would make the reverse.

But as it is now, both suits are not very nice.

A Modified Flannery, where you are able to show the 6-5 if partner asks with 2NT. Of course I don't play that, so I would open 1♠ and rebid 2♥. I'd rather lie about length in case we don't get the contract, so I get a ♠ lead.
