I was watching the a teams match on bbo and commented on a bid. i was shouted down. i asked a rhetorical question to back up my argument. i say it was a rhetorical question because i considered the answer totally obvious. others disagreed vehemently. in particular one forum poster disagreed and i said i'd wager my house that a majority on here would support my position.

 

the wager wasn't accepted (unsurprisingly) but just so i can feel smug, what do you bid with this? scoring is imps. assume you're playing vanilla 2/1

quite. the teams match in question was the JEC BBO thing so there were plenty of supposedly decent kibs. i received no support for saying this was an obvious 3♥ call. instead a load of them, including 2 with BBO stars said 3NT was clear.

3NT is a bg fat joke, I prefer to bid 4♥ leaving 3♥ for real support hands but that's not a vanilla 2/1 style.

100% clear 3H bid and await further developments. Those who believe 3NT is correct must have missed something.

In fact I find it hard to believe 3N was given more than a brief consideration, perhaps a nano second. I am not sure what people expect from 3D, for me this is normally a distributional hand approx 19 and game forcing. 2NT would be more balanced or semi balanced 18-19 and NF.

I actually bid 4H. Let partner know there is no A, nor singleton, nor void here. I see 4H no higher.

I would prefer to bid 3H, but cant due to systemic agreements, so 3NT it is.

Again, I'll post Justin's ( jlal , JLOGIC ) comment about these SJS auctions in general:

 

Imo by far in bridge the least understood concept is how to bid over a jumpshift.

 

Here is what he says about 3H ( HIS CHOICE ... could be as few as 2 card support ) vs 3NT ( from another thread http://forums.bridgebase.com/index.php?showtopic=37712 ):

 

....Because we could belong in hearts....

 

Partner could have 6 hearts easily.

 

If we bid 3N, partner will not know if we have 0..... or 2 hearts. So if he has 6 hearts, he will have a hard time bidding 4H over 3N. This is especially true if his hearts aren't great.

 

.... Because we could belong in Diam...

 

Partner could have 5-5 very easily, and we might belong in diamonds. Partner would need an extremely strong hand to bid 4D over 3N........ Over 3H he will have a much easier time rebidding 4D if we bid 3H and he has some concentrated 5-5.

 

....Because 3H does not preclude any strain or level, and 3N often will....

 

Jumpshift auctions are bulky, a lot of room has been used up to create a GF, and many shapes are still possible for opener. Bidding 3H on a doubleton saves room, and allows for an intelligent investigation of strain and level, which is perfect since we have ( 3 ) possible strains, and possible slam.

 

This is a prototypical hand where you should be bidding 3H on a doubleton.

Certainly any of the next 3 level bids is feasible ...3♥ except I would think this was weaker, 3♠ has to be artificial but even if real has to be a choice of games, and of course 3NT but not crazy about my ♠ stopper but it will generally work out okay.
