Edited, since new hand:

Much closer now. If I go with my gut, I still pass. But bad things happen when I actually think about the situation:

Partner rates to have a stiff/void in Clubs here. The fact that partner had Shortness in their suit and failed to act is not a good thing. Partner probably (hopefully?) has a few useful cards, and if nothing else, it may be a good save, however 3 tricks look fairly certain, provided partner leads a red suit. I think I would bid 5 at IMPs. There is too much to be lost by not bidding 5. Partner should understand to give us a LOT of wiggle room here, and not hang us for bidding some of their hand as well.

In conclusion, I am a 5 bidder now.

5 is completely sick.

pass or double that is the question?? well I will pass because if I double I am not happy if partner pulls and if he doesn't pull it will just be 100 and sometimes 300 and sometimes -550, not very good prospects..

I think pulling to 6 is a weird action. I don't know. if N has a lot of points, 6 may well be more expensive than 5. Plus, 6 will basically never make and maybe 5 will.

All that said, who knows what is right with these silly 8 card suits.

I could have sworn the hand in OP was what I had, guess I was tired. Anyway, actual hand below:

[hv=pc=n&s=st97h982d6caqjt65&w=sq53htdqjt98542c3&n=sak842hkj7d73ck87&e=sj6haq6543dakc942&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=3cp5c5hppdppp]399|300[/hv]

There was some heated discussion afterwards basically involving partner calling my 5H sick, me trying to justify it and suggesting that he might have pulled with his hand on the basis that I've had to guess and it looks like I've guessed wrong.

Do you pass or bid 6D with the west hand?
