Do you balance?

Double aiming for a three-three?

Not me.

Wow, the glass is 7/8 empty! I mean, even if double is wrong, with two clubs and 4-4 in the majors, I'd at least like to think the doublers are "aiming" for a 7- or 8-card major suit fit or a penalty pass of clubs.

Pass seems clear at the vul & scoring.

In my view, partner shouldn't have the hand that is looking for +800 instead of +430.

With

Kxxx  AJx  Kx  KT8x

Sure you will get +800 but that is unusual. Better to bid 3NT with that, rather than have a style that obliges opener to reopen on nearly all hands.

You will miss out on the occasional +300 when responder has a balanced 11-count.

The case for a reopening is greater nv vs vul, or at matchpoints.

in spite of all the naysayers who have gone before me, I feel either you don't open the hand or you protect on this auction and IMO it is practically foisted on you. There are too many hands where partner could not make a negative X over 2 or holds a penalty pass of 2. It just feels too anti-partnership to pass.

Auto pass.

For partner to have a penalty pass requires either a freakish distribution, in which case it is likely that they have somewhere better to play, or partner to have made a poor bid.

Much more likely is that partner is broke, and that bidding here is suicidal.

Move the queen of clubs to another suit and reopening is much better

I will autopass too. Yes it is possible that partner has a penalty pass, but it is not likely - its probability is low, therefore we should not double.

Yep. For double to be right, all white, at IMPs:

1. Pard forgot to make a neg double, or

2. Pard forgot the conditions and forgot to bid some number of NT, or

3. We find the magic layout to cowboy up a lot of IMPs on defense.

The odds are just not there, against the possibilities that we might go for a number or give the opps another chance to bid and make their game. Even if we hit a partscore of our own, things can be so that the gain is so small as to not be worth the risk. How about letting them find their real fit in diamonds?

I would double and I don't think it is close. I would help to be at the table and have some kind of read on RHO however.

Partner will not make a negative double with a 5 card major, and 2 diamonds. He also did not raise diamonds the first time and he has to have something over there. So I think there is an excellent chance to catch at least a four card major and maybe 5.

I think double is pretty bad. We are up a level with a total minimum and Qx of clubs. I think the doublers should be very happy to push them up a level, watch them make, and break even.

Btw here's a thought, some of the time partner wants you to reopen so he can pass for penalties the opponents will have actually belonged in diamonds and can now find them.

I thought you played penalty doubles.
