gwnn
We were playing matchpoints with my regular pard and we had a disagreement about a board. 1♣-p-1♠-2♥p-p-2♠-pp-3♥-p-p3♠-p-p-p I'm sorry I don't have hand records and this was a while back (actually I'm only posting because nobody else has been posting anything for the last hour or so) but say the hands were something like (note I'm attempting to hide my identity but maybe it won't work): 2♥ bidder had 3622 and 10 points3♥ bidder had 2344 and 8 points field got 110 or 140 in hearts, it looked obvious to us that we'd make 140.2♥ bidder asked his partner why he didn't raise directly3♥ bidder said he did raise but only when needed, he didn't want to turn a plus into a minus. also why did the 2♥ bidder misdefend?? it would have been down 1 EZ2♥ bidder told his partner he no longer understood anything from the bidding, he didn't expect a 2344 8 count, anyway the board was lost3♥ bidder said they should play the next round instead your general thoughts? opps were not playing support doubles but of course we didn't know that. Fluffy
unless the 2♥ bidder is a passed hand te 8 count hand is missing game too often by passing. He has 3 ways of raising to the 3 level, surelly the 8 count is good enuff for the lowest one.
NickRW
If advancer's hand was good enough for 3♥ at the 2nd time of asking, then surely it was good enough the first time.
MFA
Sounds like an easy raise to 3♥ the first time. "I did not expect 2344 8-count...". This is almost always just a bad excuse for having done something silly on defense. There are exceptions but they are far between. ;)
Free
The 3♥ bidder has a point that you should concentrate on the next round. I guess he also suggests to discuss this deal afterwards which is definitely a good idea. I think it's better to raise immediately, since overcaller may have a good hand and you could miss an easy game.

I really dislike having a discussion like this while playing btw, even when I play a club game.
Cascade
Not sure why raise so underrated. One of my partners has a saying "its just a raise".
bucky
A delayed raise in this situation (excused as "only when needed") indicates a habit resulted from playing in weak fields too often.
