Matchpoints, what do you do? Would you do something different at a different vulnerability? How about at teams?

I would double anyway, but... do you have a way to distinguish between good and bad 3 bids here?

No, we only use good/bad 2N in situations where they have bid and raised a suit.

Roth would open this hand, as would Stone IMO. There are three quick tricks, an upgradable AJT, and 5-5 shape with two good suits. Passing this hand is not an option to bridge players, IMO

I have a good/bad 2nt available here. I still double. They are coming in at adverse probability. It's far easier to net +200 at 2HX -1 versus a hard fought +110 at 3 when pard's on a 1-5-2-5 hand dreaming of a double.

I'm with Dwayne, Fluffer, and the fish.....and exercise part of the Neg-DBL convention which is to DBL to protect partner's pass.

I double, and this probably means that everyone doubles since I often pass rather than balance. Reverse the clubs and diamonds and I might pass since hearing 3D in response to my double would not please me. As it is, it can still go wrong but I double.

Actually, doubling with clubs and diamonds reversed may not be so bad. If pard skips over everything else to bid diamonds he may well have five, and having the three card support in the hand with the void is not the worst thing in the world. So I guess I vote for X that way also.

Larry Cohen once wrote an article advocating strongly against double here with a void. Basically if you cant stand the parts to pass , do not double.

Most of you like defensive prospects here it seems . However I would not be surprised if they have something like 9 trumps and 2H makes. LHO can see the vulnerability too

Double at the speed of light. It's only Matchpoints and I smell some.

1. they go down

2. pard pulls and we make

3. pard pulls and we go down (even better for sounding tough on the way)

4. they make 670 or 870

Three out of four is good odds and rho did pass the 2 bid which makes a 9 card fit for them that includes decent strength unlikely.

Ok, reason I asked is that I was told that Xing, and not bidding 3, is just plain losing bridge in the long run by a player that I respect. It turns out that on this hand we can make 4 (5 if I pick off the singleton K offsides), and they can make 3, but we can't legitimately get to diamonds unless I bid them. Anyone willing to do a sim, partner cannot have 3 spades and 6+ HCP, or both minors and 8+ (unless he has made a penalty pass with a heart stack), and RHO cannot have heart support and 8+ HCP, what comes out the longterm winner in terms of X or 3?
