If this thread is about what the second best action is, that is sort of interesting and I would pass.

Just to add to this, here is a hand from the Rosenblum R64 yesterday:

[hv=d=n&v=e&n=st842hq76dj2ckjt9&w=skj9h532dq95c8654&e=sq653hjt4da4caq73&s=sa7hak98dkt8763c2]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

P 1C 1D P

P ?

At some tables east doubled and south had the guts to redouble. Not really for me (discuss?), but it was wildly successful, since west had a pretty clear 2C bid which goes for 500 against nothing.

This hand is from the Bermuda Bowl final. I just looked it up again, it was all vulnerable, and the clubs were actually AQT2.

Anyway, Hamman passed and the Bridge World report (by Bramley) didn't even comment on it.

(It was board 4 from the last set, which USA started with a lead of 40 IMPs.)

I think it's really important to redouble on hands like this one.

A simple overcall at the one-level carries a very wide range of values and can be almost totally devoid of defense. For this reason, partner will very rarely be able to effectively penalize the opponents even with a trump stack. On auctions like this one (1X-1Y-Pa-Pa) people balance very aggressively (and I agree that in the long run, it is right to balance aggressively in these auctions) -- but when overcaller has a full opening with good defense you have to be able to catch them out. Redouble is the way to signal partner that you actually have a good hand here.

IMPs, don't remember the vulnerability, sorry.[hv=d=s&s=sjt8hakxxdxxcaqxx]133|100|Scoring: IMP

X is not only WTP but it is mandatory to protect your partner all other choices get negative valuations and X=10000000000 on a ten point scale :P

Arg, I am not quite awake it seems.

In the BB final hand, Hamman's opening bid was in third seat, so partner was a passed hand.

Yeah that's different.

But in general I think people don't pass often enough in this auction. For instance I see people reopening here with 13-count 3-3-3-4 shapes. I don't think that's right, partner is very likely to be broke. This is especially true after 1C - 1D, but also after 1m - (1H) I think it is more often right to pass it out than people think.
