East deals and opens 4♥ Hand submitted by Hanoi5, his comments were; "Interesting to see how pairs react to the vulnerableopponent’s preemptive opening(4H by dealer). Best contract is really hard to get to, but a little thinking might get pairs to it (?). 6C, 10; 5D, 7; 5C, 6; 4S, 5; 4Hx, 4; 6D, 2"[/hv] I did not award 6♣ the top scoring spot, but it is open for discussion. rogerclee
We bid to 6C by south which I think is a really great spot single dummy. It's not as good a spot double dummy, since west is going to be making effective non-heart leads, but I think it is a really good single dummy spot. jdonn
Hard to evaluate 6♣. What are the odds of clubs 5-1 or diamonds 4-0 after a 4♥ opening here? And of course it could still go down even if neither of those things happen. I definitely wouldn't call it great, it seems quite borderline to even be in to me. But I'm still quite impressed you got there. It was funny, I was south and I can't bid 4NT since gib doesn't take it as asking for a suit to play in. I tanked a really long time, I wanted to just bid 6♣ so bad since he is not an aggressive doubler here, but finally I passed ;) Maybe I should have, who knows if he had the same hand but 4054 he might even bid 7♣. I think in hindsight I should have gone for it.
tgoodwinsr
I wonder if bidding 6C should be called a "P*ltch bid." (Only kidding.)
hanp
I expect our auction was identical to what most bid: 4H - p - p - Dblp - 4NT - p - 5Dall pass I was very excited about Roger's bid. I'd say the slam is better than 50%. Whether that makes it the MP top spot depends on the field, if many pairs are in 4HX or 6D then 5D will do better, if the whole field is in 5D then 6C should be better imo. inquiry
I couldn't give 6♣ the top spot, It seems that after a 4♥ preempt, the ♣ split will not be all that friendly. Simulations have 6♣ making well less than 50% of the time. But, 6♣ is a better slam than 6♦ or 6♠. So the question is what is the best game contract? Well 5♦ almost certainly will make, but surprizingly also will 4♠, which scores higher. So my top spot is 4♠. 5DN hanp/jlall5DN sohcahtoa/east4evil5DN gnasher/catch224HXE ant590/cryzeejim4HXE peachy/Ig624HXE jdonn/gib4HEx TimG/TgoodwinSr6CS wackojack/flycycle6CS cherdano/rogerclee5SN MBodell/Javabean6DN bid_em_up/TylerE6DN Hrothgar/Free6DN olegru/driver7336DN awn/elianna6DN Karlson/threenobob6SN bluecalm/redds 4S = 115D = 104HX = 66C = 55S = 26D = 16S =
