If this really, really bothers you, click on the little yellow "GEAR" on the bottom of the Vugraph window, and change the option of who is the "player at bottom". The default, I think is YOU.. .change it to SOUTH.. then south the direction is ALWAYS very easy to determine...

You can always open the Movie, it shows the south in the south position. If there are any hands that have been played, you will see the names of the people in the correct chair. If not (say first hand), you will see EAST/WEST/NORTH/SOUTH labels, but one of the labes will be a different color. That one (the highlighted position) is where you are sitting.

Learn the concept of dealer.. North is dealer on every fourth hand.. So board 1,5,9,13, etc... This means, EW deals even number boards, NS deals odd number boards. So look at the little box in the upper corner and see who is dealer and the rather it is an odd or even number. If it is an odd number, NS are dealing, if even, EW are dealing. This requires a little more mental gymanstics to figure out who dealt if odd or even, but not too much.

Finally, during play, click the gear button to mentioned in the first to stick south in the south position, see who it is, and then click it back to you in lower position if you like .

There are probably some other hints.. but these are useful.

Is it really that hard to change the figure of the table with vulnerabilities in the upper left corner to something where D = dealer (already implemented) and the other directions with the letters N, E, S and W?? This would make it 1000x easier than all these so called 'hints' to determine what seat we're in...

Nobody has ever been able to provide a good answer to this question:

When you are playing, why do you need to know your direction?

Despite this, we would put in direction markers for all 4 seats if we

knew a way to do this that looked nice. I have tried various methods

and hated all of them.

I always have better games if I am sitting the same way as the bathtubs.

Be nice to know in advance whats in store for me

I don't see a problem with current format. An easy way to refer is to look at movies, or do what Ben says.

However, if Fred would like to implement something for showing directions, I think just having brackets next to an ID and the direction there is fine.

ie

Inquiry (North)

Yeah don't put "N", will probably get complaints from SOME people about N or S not being explicit enough.

I don't need to know what position I am in when I'm playing -------- but would find it easier when looking at the results of the hand if positions were obvious :D

If only to be able to know the direction you're sitting when you do score comparison would this would be nice to have.

Also, how about putting the direction to the far right corner of the players name in a much smaller font (N)

Also it would be nice to see the contrct right in front of you next to declarer's name so your eye doesn't have to hunt to the bottom of the screen each time you want to check the contract.

That seems to me to be right in front of you. Redundant, too, since the complete auction is in the upper right.

To clean things up a bit, I think it would be nice to put the board information in the center of the table, just like it would be if you were playing at a real table. But, that's just a cosmetic thing.

Well, while experimenting I found a cute work around to this problem. Use the Yellow Gear to modify options. Check the "Annotate cards" check box. See what happens and you know where you are at the Table

I know this seems about a dead issue... there are lot of ways to figure out who is north. For instance, north is dealer on boards 1,5,9,13,17,21,25, etc, as well as all the tips given above.

Despite this, people still occassionally ask for direction markers. I got thinking and wonder if in the box around the board number (which shows dealer with a D" and who is vul with red bar), if it would be possible to add directional indicators there. So that north will get a N on the bar, South a S, etc... you can still indicate dealer with a moving D... That would not junk up the display.

I have tried this several times with several different fonts, colors, styles, etc...

It always looks horrible (to me at least) and making this an option is not an option (too many options in too many cluttered dialog boxes already).

I agree Ben - BUT in some tourneys you change direction ( ie is not a straight Mitchell) so I think having the directions SOMEWHERE on the "table" square should be possible without making the display too distracting  [However I am NOT a programmer ]

I like this, maybe even less than that, just a N to show North?

Unlike the dollar Bill, Fred will never have 'Annuit Cœptis' inscribed on whatever he does B) ...there will always be someone who thinks what changes he makes are awesome and those ( a minority i hasten to add) who think they are, well to speak euphemistically, bad...

If he thinks it looks cluttery or unaesthetic then fine.

I personally use a divining-rod to find out where i am sitting. It works for me.

Well, I have never figured out why everyone is so interested in what direction is what... all I care for is who dealt, and what the vulnerabilty is. The direction is totally arbitrary anyway.... I only made the suggestion because I got two inquiries the same day about it while on line (and I get an inquiry about once month on this topic).
