But why do you bid 2 showing 4-7 if you don't have 4-7 and have one more spade?

I don't like 2 because it's an underbid and don't like 3 either because my spades are not suitable enough, so 1 is good. I don't understand why 1 would work so poorly, looks like we play 3 no?

The flaws for 3 are also flaws for 2. There isn't much preemptive about this hand. Anyway I don't at all see why 1 would blow the board if the field is in 4.

1 (X) 1

2 2

3 3

and we are done. I don't know why the field can't handle it but yay me for being able to evaluate my hands!

1-(X)-??

IMO 1 = 10, 3 = 6, 4 = 5, 2 = 3.

  • You have too many for 2
  • You have too much defence for 3
  • You have too few playing tricks for 4 :(
  • You have too many HCP for a bid other than 1 :)

4X - 2? Oh well, Fluffy can't accuse me of being a result-merchant :)

My reasoning was that suit quality is low, the jacks are spread and short and I had a table feeling about RHO's double promising majors (not sure of why this, but he in fact had 4432).

But my reasonings are not very good latelly so listen to others better :).

If you feel that the hand is unsuitable for 3 or higher (I do) then 2 is just fine.

The seventh spade compensates for the bad honor structure and the weak suit.

The trouble with 1 is that you may not be able to rebid them at a low level, since opponents have a heart fit.

Having quacks outside of your long suit and a singleton jack is enough for me to consider this hand well within 4-7 HCP.
