BudH
Top flight regional knockout event, all vulnerable [hv=d=s&v=b&s=sj98xxhd10cakj987x]133|100|Scoring: IMPPass-Pass-1♥-Pass3♣-Pass-4♥-Pass?[/hv]3C is natural and invitational. 1. Would you have opened this hand as dealer? 2. Would you bid 1S or an invitational 3C on your second call? (2C would be artificial - Drury) 3. Do you pass 4H in the given auction or do something else? gwnn
i would not have passed in first seat.
aguahombre
1. NO, Unless I had one of those gadgets2. 3C is fine, unless this turns into a UI question, where partner alerted B) 3. See "2." above
hanp
I don't think 3C is fine, we have 5 spades!
aguahombre
Maybe "fine" was overstating. With the Drury condition, thus 2C not possible, responding 1S can work out as badly as 3C. I would choose the good 7-bagger over the weak five-bagger; the good news for me, is that I haven't been dragged kicking and screaming over to Drury in my brief 30 years of off-and-on play. dake50
Seeing a misfit (having 0-1 support for partner), I surely do not jump 3C. Try 1S. Then 3C over 2H rebid.
ONEferBRID
Yes, open 1C ... I have a gadget, but we probably end up in 4H anyway,but partner is more informed when he makes the final decision: 1C - 1H1S - 2D! ( 4th suit GF )??..2S! = no 3h, either 4-4 or sub-minimum 5-5 in the blacks..3S jump = 5s/6c w/strength worthy of a reverse After2S! - 3H ( extra length ) 3S* ( no 2h, the 5-5 min or sub-min hand ) - 4H - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - *If Opener had the 4-4 hand, he would show it with any rebid other than 3S. Edit: The 2S! rebid w/ a 4-4 in the blacks is a Max Hardy's suggestion when there is no stop in the 4th suit, and no support for partner's red suit: " The Principle of the Least Plausible Rebid " . jonottawa
Yes (1♣) 1S Yes
bucky
I like to play 3♣ here (by passed hand) as fit-jump. Anyway, given that 3♣ shows invitational hand with clubs, I think 3♥ has to be forcing. Therefore 4♥ shows strong preference of playing in hearts (regardless of my support), I can pass with clear conscience.

the hog
Pass in first hand unless playing a 2 suited opening. I guess those who think it is an obvious 1evel opening in a 2/1 system are quite used to going down. Great game opposite Ax KQxxx KJxxx x - and partner WILL force to game of course! 1S over 1H; definitely NOT 3C.

mikegill
1) I think it's clear to open the bidding with 1♣. You have easy rebids and it's important to get in the first shot if it gets competitive. 2) 3♣ is a terrible bid, 1♠ seems obvious. Hopefully partner won't pass when we're cold for game. 3) Yes, I would pass. I didn't promise any hearts, so hopefully partner doesn't need any. 4♠ seems like a complete shot in the dark.
