W Kovacs
I wasn't sure which forum this hand truly belonged in, but I thought this was probably the best place. [hv=d=w&v=n&s=sxxhjxxxxxdckjxxx]133|100|Scoring: IMPWest opens 1NT. Your bid.[/hv]Simple question. Do you act over the 1NT opening? I'll go ahead and give the full hand below, because what happened at our table was somewhat interesting. [hv=d=w&v=n&n=sxxhjxxxxxdckjxxx&w=sajxhaxxdqxxxcaqt&e=stxxhktxdjtxcxxxx&s=skqxxxhqdakxxxxcx]399|300|Scoring: IMPBidding at our table went:(1NT)-P-(P)-2♦(2NT)-AP[/hv]In our methods, I actually do have a bid for my hand. We play Astro, and at these colors I probably should have bid 2♣ (my hand is weak, but the shape is to die for), showing at least 5-4 Hearts and a lower suit (the ♥s can be the 4 card suit). But I blanked on whether the correct bid was 2♣ or 2♦, confusing it with a much different, unrelated sequence. So I passed. That allowed my partner to use Astro. Initially he misclicked and bid 2♣, but asked for an immediate undo and bid the correct 2♦. After having a few more seconds to think about it, I knew the correct meaning of the bids, and knew we had a terrible misfit going, so my pass was easy. 2NT went down 1. It wasn't a top, but still a tidy +1.43 IMPs for us. If I had bid correctly we likely end in 2H, which goes down 2 if I look at things right. Not as interesting as declaring 3♦xx holding 1 HCP, but that is a different story.
P_Marlowe
Yes. What to bid is a matter of system agreement. If I have no agreement, I will bid 2H, if I can show the 2-suiter, I will do this,we play Lionel, so for us, it would be 2C, which showes clubs and hearts,we would end up in 2D, not a big success either. Cyberyeti
I'd have astrod and gone down. I quite liked K, A, 10xxxx, 10xxxxx on a similar theme LHO opens a weak no trump, partner bids 2♦ (5+/4+ spades and another, if the other is hearts, spades will be better). I found the pass and caught partner 5431 and he scrambled this home for all the matchpoints.
bucky
I think it is clear to bid with North hand. Against strong NT, you would much prefer to bid with shape than value. Of course the right bid won't work out every time, but when you have 6-5 shape, the chance for finding reasonable fit is quite good. FWIW, this hand you should head for minus score no matter what. The 2NT rebid from opener was really poor.
NickRW
The 2NT rebid from opener was really poor. Yuh - that was easily the worst call. Opener must have said to him/herself - "hmm - I've got a nice hand - these other dudes are cheating me out of my contract - no matter that partner probably has very little - anyway, perhaps partner didn't hear the first time. I know - I'll just put my head on the block!" Nick
