1 - p - 1NT - X

2 - ?[/hv]

Matchpoints, we are vul, they are not. 1NT was 6-9.

Partner and I had a disagreement about this hand. Hope to get some answers we can learn from!

Whats the thought process good players use to decide on the bid here?

Not so sure I want to pass at MP. Sure some, many partners are going to get excited if we bid 2 - but should they? Opps have around half the deck - so p should know that we've got about 20 minus whatever he can see. In that light perhaps I don't have such a bad hand in context.

Nor am I that sure I am going to get another chance. Responder may be about to pass with 4 diamonds and p might be be about shrug, "I've bid my hand once, why stick my neck out twice".

Pass at these colors. The red suit shortnesses are on top of me, which could get ugly. Txx/Jxx in opponents suits are terrible holdings. Would bid 2 if the colors were reversed, or all white, or if I was, say, 5-2-2-4... or 5-1-3-4.

I agree completely with your common sense here at these colors and -200 in 2 or in a higher contract if PD thinks we actually have something will be a near zero.

This is a very easy pass at these colors with this junk. If PD x's again, we can then bid if passed around to us or if still at the 2 level.

Voluntarily bidding when this weak is a good way to have 3 opps rather than 2 since PD will expect more.

This situation depends on your agreements. The 'standard' call would probably be pass. But it is quite possible to play 2S here as promising very little in the way of strength. If I have that arrangement then I prefer to get 2S off my chest now; if not then I'll Pass and back in later in case partner gets over-excited.

If I could bid 2 and bar partner from bidding on with a medium hand, I would do so.

Its quite likely LHO will bid 2 and now that I have boxed my hand 2 is perfect. If LHO does more, I'll be glad I passed.

Nicely said. Agree with passing for now.

Agree with all of this -- especially the red suit holdings. I'd add that partner's honors are not likely to be in a working position with the stronger hand on his left. The opps also haven't found a fit yet. You're likely going to be on lead so you don't have to worry about partner's club lead potentially blowing a trick.

Also agree with Phil's points.
