pass...

I'd like a little more strength to make the preference, since partner may bid again with a near jumpshift, and my hand isn't likely to be good for him. And, at the other end of the spectrum, if he is weak, the 4=4 (I dream of 4=5) fit may be enough to salvage 90 as opposed to -50 or may push at 110

Even if partner has manufactured a 3 card bid, with an awkward hand, our poor result in 2 (if it is a poor result) may be matched by a poor result when he bids over 2 anyway.

BTW, the normal lead against 2 on these auctions is a trump and that is likely to be good for us on this hand.

I did understand that sometimes you give preference with 2-4, but thought the hand was too weak for that action.

You usually give preference if the hand is too STRONG. Here's why:

xx

AKQxx

Kx

KQxx

Axxx

Jx

Qxx

Jxxx

If you decide to pass 2, you might miss out on a good 3NT, which you would reach if you had bid it

1 1

2 2

2NT 3NT

So you should pass with a 4-2 if the hand is weak, not strong.

I guess we passed the quiz.

So did I. Just surprised it was worth 10 out of 11. I did understand that sometimes you give preference with 2-4, but thought the hand was too weak for that action.

That's not because of the bidding. You made 9 tricks in C, which is quite impossible against normal defense. A natural line would be cashing two H trick, and you'll get ruffed, three diamonds and another H would put you down one. Even if you play C to CK at trick two, then you can play SK to pitch a diamond. Still, your opp can ruff your second H later with CQ, then play DK and D low to partner's Q, his partner can draw CA and Cx, In that case, you can only make 8 tricks. So at the table, your opp probably cashed DA and DK instead.

PS: I am not good at analyzing - but 2H makes as well?

Club ace followed by four diamonds looks like a straightforward way to six tricks on defense in hearts -- many other ways as well. I'm sure a couple North players rebid 2H over 1S.

I like pass; I'm not sure a hand where one strain splits 3-2 and the other 5-1 proves its merit but like it nonetheless.
