all red

partner deals and opens 1, bidding goes 1-(P)-1N-(2) pass back to you on balancing seat

JT9 Axx KQTxx xx

what do you bid and why?

does 3D come to mind?

does it matter that you play a prepared club where partner opens 1C systemically even with 4Ds and 2Cs, for example?

i feel like 3D is quite a poor bid but i can't quite articulate why to my partner

any suggestions?

is an initial response of 1 natural?

Maybe not for them, but even in a natural system 1NT would be chosen by many players for systemic reasons. For instance, if 1C-1N shows 8-10, and 1D is nebulous ---weaker in NT or real suit and stronger hand or longer suit.

Transfer responders to 1C will also be comfortable with not having bid 1D :)

Having bid 1NT showing 8-10, I would defend 2S in peace, blaming our agreements if opener has four diamonds and 2 clubs; and definitely calling 1C something other than "prepared".

The hand has 12 cards, so I take it you have 3 clubs.

It is very likely pard will have one of these:

1. 12-14 balanced

2. 11-14 unbalanced with 5 clubs and 4 in a red suit

If he has hand 1, you'll probably get away with bidding 3. However, if he has hand 2, 3 now is frought with danger, as you may get a xx15 for dummy.

Still, double seems to be fine, as you already denied a 4 card major. I'd try that, regardless of scoring and match status. If pard bis..

2NT: you can either sit it or pull to 3 if you feel like hogging the hand

3: pard probably has the unbalanced variant, so you should sit it

3: fine, pass

3 and higher: I can't really see why he'd bid that.
