[hv=d=w&v=b&s=skqxxxhjxdxxcatxx]133|100|Scoring: IMP

1-p-2-??[/hv]

1 showed 16+ with any shape and 2 showed 4-7 points with 6 hearts.

If you pass, would you overcall when NV? If you pass even then, could you approximately explain what criteria you apply? This is a situation that I've never given thought to so before. Maybe because it is not so important.

Won't bid, I don't see much reason for it. They likely have game, we are unlikely to sac and I'd just tell how to play the hand. Of course I direct the right lead but I don't find it worth it. NV it's borderline, if I was 5134 it would be much more clear to bid.

to be honest I was not really thinking of acting on this particular hand (even though the well-known guy on BBO bid 2, I don't generally like his style of bidding) but it got me thinking what handtypes should act here?

is it just practically the same category of hands that acts over

1NT-p-2-?

Ask yourself this: if RHO is dealer and opened 2, would you overcall? Now does the knowledge that LHO has 16+ change your action?

Of course LHO having 16+ changes your action. More specifically, it means that partner knows that we are not trying for game (they have showed 20+), so he knows to take my bid competitively. In contrast, over their weak 2, it's important for us to look for our spade game, so both my overcall and partner's advances will be generally aimed more constructively.

I bid 2 for the lead, although I'm not strongly in favor of it with this hand/colors. Add the J and I want to overcall here almost always and I still wouldn't overcall directly with my poor 11 count over a weak 2.

It's much closer to the set of hands that acts over a weak two opener, than to the set that acts after that auction. 2D is unlimited; but it's still more limited than over a 1950s-era 1NT-p-2H, since the 1C opener is much less defined shapewise than over 1NT.

As mentioned, you're not worried about game your way - but you are at the 2-level and you need to be prepared to survive having a strongish hand on your left not being able to nail you too easily.

The posted hand I would bid NV-only-and-MP-only.
