Rejected Claims

Recommended Posts

Why is it that all 4 hands are tabled when a claim is rejected? It seems to me that it would be more correct to have only the declarer's hand tabled as in regular tournament play.

Any comments on this?

When declarer claims in real life he should clearly state a line that he will follow. He can not claim on a misdefence, so he is claiming on the basis that he will make x tricks irrespective of defence. So it does not really matter whether the defenders can see each others cards. And in any case, they can see their own hand, dummy, and now declarers, so they "know" the fourth hand anyway. In real life it is obviously impossible for the defenders to show their cards to each other without the declarer catching a glimpse, but thankfully online this is easy. So this feature is good, because it skews things in favour of the non-claiming party, which is how things should be.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, never had the experience in a ftf tournament, but it was my understanding that, when declarer makes a claim, the defenders are entitled to consult with each other as to their defence?

So for the software to show each defender each other's hands (the declarer does not see their hands unless/until the claim is accepted) seems the easiest way of implementing this right of consultation.

Don't claim wrong, then you don't have these troubles anyway

This has happened to me twice already in the last 6 months. The CHAT button & CLAIM button are too close to each other. At trick 2, I claimed all tricks by mistake, because my intention was to use the CHAT button. All my cards were open and defense is so easy afterwards. I paid for my negligence.

I wish the CHAT button was to the right of the ARROW keys.

Even if you hit the "claim" button, that only opens up the claim window (which looks very different from the chat window) in which you type explanation, or not, and adjust the number of tricks claimed, or not, and then hit "ok". So one misclick (claim instead of chat) won't result in a misclaim; you would have to either click the claim button and then hit the "enter" key, or click the claim button and then click "ok" instead of cancel. In either case, sorry if you made those mistakes in sequence, but I doubt it's all that frequent an occurrence.

The original point here was a question about whether all four hands should be face up after a claim. I am not sure that is the case. I think not. Rather, I think the situation is this:

Dummy can see all the cards.

Defenders can see all the cards.

Declarer sees only his hand and dummy's unitl the claim is accepted.

If this last part is incorrect it should be changed.

Hi all,

Just not to forget that defenders are also allowed to claim, not only declarer

Rado

Yes,and declarer does not get to see defenders cards if a declarer claim is rejected.

When declarer/or defender claims a certain number of tricks,he has to show the opposition that it is a correct claim, and only by showing all cards will this work.

I also don't think any reference to how it works f2f is relevant, since we're not playing f2f.

:)

This is absolute nonsense!

1) you don't need to press the chat button to chat! Just type and press <enter>.

2) there's absolutely no need to chat during play or defense. Some TD's don't even allow it, with good reasons imo.

3) before you actually claim, you have to press a RED "claim" button, not a gray "chat" button.

4) the claim window looks completely different than the chat window. There are buttons up and down, it's smaller, and it has other text in it (how many tricks you are about to be claiming).

5) the position of these windows is also different: claim window is in the upper left corner, chat window is in the bottom.

6) IF you claim, you can still quickly cancel your own claim!

If you mix up those 2 functions, you're either blind as a mole, or just too lazy to look at what you're doing. In the first case I'd say buy a big screen and use a very low resolution, in the second case you just don't have any arguments to change the current situation. And if you have Parkinson and can't click on the right button, then use the keyboard. <Esc> and <Enter> are VERY far from eachother...
