what is going on?

earlier at the buffett cup, this happened...

without looking at either hand, what do you think this is happening in this sequence?

1D-(dbl)-rdbl-(1H)

3D- (P) - 3H - (P)

3S- (P) - 4H - (P)

now let's reveal responder (redoubler's) hand.

who thinks 4H is a good bid?

who prefers 4D?

for me 4D is vastly superior as it removes any ambiguity. 4D shows D support with SI

otherwise would not have bid 3H

What was so difficult here, the H bid agreed a D fit. I would have bid a bit differently perhaps but see nothing here that is awkward. The redble hand is waiting to hear if partner can show a black K. Some might like to see 4C before 4H, but I see the redble hand bidding toward 6 and trying to investigate 7.

Why redouble in the first place, its just asking the responding opponent to gamble on 4S.

cos he wanted to punish opponents at the 1 level, it is not so hard to imagine hands that want oth penalties at the 1 level and slam now that partner shows shape. Balanced powerhouses the most.

So, did they play 4H?

I would think 7 would be much, much more likely than 4. IMO It is really kind of hard to comment on the auction since you have no clue on the agreements

Right, the agreements. I assume that Buffet Cup pairs have quite a few of these. The meaning of a second cuebid in competition might be one of them.

Taking the auction at face value:

3D - distributional extras, unwilling to miss out on the game bonus by defending anything cheap (most likely we're vul and they aren't) More often a 7-card suit than 6, but a good six and short hearts is certainly possible.

3H - stopper ask for 3NT

3S - I don't have it

4H - slam try in diamonds

Given responder's hand, I don't care for the 3H bid, but given the auction up to 3S, 4C and 4H by responder have to be cuebids for diamonds (I'd prefer 4C first, but maybe their agreements are different, or maybe responder doesn't trust his partner to recognize a cuebid.)

Instead of 3D, perhaps 4D if our style is to cuebid kings freely; thatll position us better to decide between 6D/6N/7D/7N. If we cuebid aces first I don't see anything better over 3D than RKCing and asking for kings if we get two keys.

junyi_zhu probably would not agree with me, but after partner's 3D-jump rebid, Responder is ready to ask for key cards with no 2 quick losers in any side suit and needing to find out trump honors.    If he has the dAK and the 2 black K's you are on a laydown for the grand when he has 7 cards Diam:

1D-(dbl)-RDBL-(1H)

3D- (P) - 4D! ( Minorwood )

4NT! (3rd step= 2 - dQ) - 5C! ( specific K-ask : asks for cheapest bid outside K )

5S ( sK, denies Ht K ) - 5NT ( 2nd K-ask )

6C ( cK ) - 7D
