pooltuna
you have enough to introduce imprecision into their auction
hanp
Yes I'd bid 2D. Although I'm a bit ashamed of my suit and strength, I don't think it is really close. With 6-4 distribution enough good things can come of acting immediately. I think I would pass if we were vulnerable.
Fluffy
3♦ or pass, I'd pass
gwnn
I really like 6-4 so I'll bid 2♦. Fully aware that it's at least a little bit sick and can go incredibly wrong.
andy_h
I don't mind weaker overcalls when NV but this one cuts it too short with no supporting honours. I would overcall if the honour location was different. It'd be more attractive if we're favourable since a sacrifice then is more profitable but I still wouldn't, so I pass. jdonn
I would pass. Sure I'd like to get into the auction but I'm weak, have a lousy suit, and a very low offense/defense ratio. I think bidding will more often either get in trouble or help them play the hand than be productive with this.
hanp
I don't think we have a very low offense to defense ratio. It's true that our honors are far from offensive, but our shape is.
MFA
2♦, but just barely.
jdonn
I don't think we have a very low offense to defense ratio. It's true that our honors are far from offensive, but our shape is. One of those factors has a far bigger impact in my mind than the other on this hand. And I didn't mean just that the offense was bad (which it is although that factor alone wouldn't earn the "very" that I used due to the shape), I also meant that the defense was good, which is not really detracted from at all by the shape. mikeh
Pass. This is not the type of hand on which I want partner saving, if they bounce in hearts, or doubling, based on short diamonds, or even necessarily leading diamonds if LHO ends up in notrump. Plus my heart King is far more likely to be a useful card on defence than on offence. Could be wrong....most frequently when we can do better in a partscore in diamonds than they can in a partial in a major, and there can definitely be an advantage from disrupting their auction. But on the whole, this just doesn't make the grade for me.
Phil
I pass. JDonn passing? He is now an official member of the old guys club. His insurance rates will go down as a result. I don't think 2♦ is crazy, and its kind of close. I'm not worried about getting walloped, but I want pard to take a bullish view toward 3N holding an 10-11 count, the ♦Q and a heart stopper. Han is right that our shape is offensive, but that only matters if we play in a minor suit. And who is to say we won't beat 4M?
hanp
The arguments of the old guys are a little confusing to me. Jdonn thinks the hand is good enough offensively, but is worried because the hand has too much defense. Mikeh on the other hand is worried that we have too little defense if partner makes a penalty double. And Clayton won't overcall in diamonds because he is worried the hand is not good enough for other strains. Seems like one can come up with a lot of arguments against overcalling, and I admit that it is quite a crappy hand. still, at all white and with shortness in the opponent's suit, I try to look for reasons to bid. I think I saw some.
mikeh
The arguments of the old guys are a little confusing to me. With age comes wisdom Or senility Overcalling on these hands reminds me of a saying from my days as a motorcyclist before a close encounter with a pickup truck persuaded me to stick to driving cars: There are old motorcyclists, there are bold motorcyclists, but there are no old, bold motorcyclists. Not completely apropos given that I am not overly concerned on the given hand, about going for a number in 2♦, but still relevant.
jdonn
Jdonn thinks the hand is good enough offensively I do? Seems I said it has bad (but not "very" bad) offense. However I agree with you that the arguments of one or two who agree with me aren't particularly convincing.

Pict
This is better than my partner's overcalls, and just about ok for mine - I'm not slam going to overcall, not even game going.

I don't mind overcalling with 10 HCP, still, this hand looks like only 7 HCP. Change the hand to xx x Axxxxx Axxx, it is probably closer to a 2D overcall.
