Are you sure that your double is better in the long run as a take out double against spades?

This demonstrates a weakness of the standard English defence to a Multi. If North could show a takeout double of spades on the first round, that would make it rather easy.

now the auction makes sense.

 

Given that we have only 3 spades, I was assuming that the passing out of 4H

was the random bid, although why one would pass with a weak two in spades

was not clear.

 

As it is now, I still think, that North should pass, but he may make a borderline

T/O X, if North passes, than South will pass as well.

In the equivalent weak-two sequence at our table our opponents didn't seem to have any difficulty:

  2♠ pass 4♠ 5♦

  pass 6♦

Teammates bid 2D-P-4D, which allowed East in with a double. One pair told me they didn't get in after the auction started 2D-P-4C "Transfer to your major", I would have thought both hands could have acted there!
