Never put an eight-card suit down in dummy

I do not pass 2, particularly at these colors.

3 suits me fine trying to keep opponents out.

I will bid 3 and will insist on if necessary, at least up to the 5 level and I will not let the opponents play below the 5 level.

I doubt that bids will excite partner. If it does, opponents will have a very good fit in a major.

My guess is that on average even 5 will produce less undertricks than 2

I am constrained by system here - my advances at the 3-level or higher are all fit bids. That means I have to pass now and bid an appropriate number of clubs later.

In the absence of any agreements about fit bids in the way, 5C now looks sensible - more descriptive than 3C begging partner to repeat his diamonds again, anyway.

Now let's get real and mastermind the auction a little bit since we are at favorable and this nine card suit is making our license to steal burn a hole in our pocket. I presume the passers will be ready to take action after the auction continues ...P-(X)-P-(P); ??? Now is anybody selling out for less than 4 or maybe 5. Now what if we do it beforehand to make life miserable on not only on RHO but the probable powerhouse hand LHO is holding. How badly are we masterminding this auction? Partner could of course have the 20HCP 2 overcall that looks to be standard on BBF. IMV this just looks like a high variance decision between pass and 5 either of which could work out well.

Here is why 5 is a bad idea:

[hv=d=w&v=e&n=sak83h9543dkqj52c&w=s975haq876da96cak&e=sqj1042hk10d8743c83&s=s6hj2d10cqjt976542]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

The passers will go down two in 2. The 3 bidders will go down one or two in 4, but they won't be doubled. The opponents can make a part score.

None of this is really all that surprising after the auction begins as it has begun. I had some sympathy with our team-mates, because at their table West began with a strong club, North showed spades and diamonds and any strength, and East showed some values, so South hadn't much idea what the right approach was. Minus 500 did not compare well with minus 110 at our table when 3 (which was not forcing) was passed out and allowed to make, but it wouldn't have compared very well with plus 50 either.

In the natural auction given, however, if 3 is forcing then pass is indeed a "no-brainer". I reserve judgement as to the quantity of brains required to play 3 as showing a diamond fit, but I express no such reservations regarding a jump to 5. As Jeremy Flint so aptly put it, why squeal before you are hurt?

To call pass with nine cards in a suit a no-brainer is a bit over the top.

Just wonder how many cards you need in a suit before you will bid opposite a simple overcall at favorable vulnerability, would 10 or 11 or 12 be right? Just guessing.

well any 12 card suit a priori is 55% to make slam at worst so that is acceptable :D

This is what I came up with viewing only my cards, as I would have bid:

(See P as 8-11 hcp + 4 in hand) It would be nice to think there could be 12 spades split 4(weak/split)

-4-4 or 3-4-5 etc. and they dont bid, but how so with responder lacking even 3H (or does he lack 6/7 hcp by a bit, but opener stands just under a 2c opening?!) In either case they bid after 2d.

I am thinking to bid 4c discounting the extra card. I'm bidding def not to make. 4c may discourage major game reply if fit is their problem. If they do bid 4sp (or H) I figure them to Make so come back with 5cl.(or 5cl vs 4nt when it comes as interference and probably is the reply they need) I don't see them having slam, tho they will be welcome to try, & without BW. If they end up at 5sp/H for Game try, looks to me like one card matter to us or them. As good a defensive situation as available.

Sound reasonable? Or am I neglecting something? (I do not see my p elevating the bid, tho if he goes to 5cl ... which i dont think is makeable, and 5 d definately not, well I was prepared to go 5cl anyway ... but got to have a little fling with asking for a 4cl discount
