TylerE and bid_em_up

Is alerting and explaining your bids really allowed when your partner can see the explanations? This seems like it violates the "no memory aids" rule.

There was discussion of alerting here:

but it seems like explaining the bids in the alert box should not even be debatable?

Did this really happen? It would be pretty absurd if it did, since TylerE and bid_em_up would be blatantly cheating, and the host would have to be asleep.

Oh please.

Why would you even make a stupid comment like this?

We had done all of our bidding in previous rounds at teaching tables. Ben had told us that it was ok to alert our bids for him. Since we never play @ partnership bidding tables, I was unaware (and pretty sure Tyler was also) that our alerts would show to partner.

I think it was done once (possibly twice), then the host said something.

My understanding is that this happened.

1) One of you self-alerted your bid at least once.

2) As a consequence the other person must have seen the alert.

3) You bid as if this didn't happen, seeing partner's alert.

If this didn't happen then I apologize.

How is this relevant? You saw the alert, you said to yourself "wow this is interesting, I can see what my partner wants all his bids to mean!", and then you continued to bid as if nothing was new. Also the host wasn't immediately aware because it appeared to him the way it always does.

I'm surprised this took place. There was a clear agreement that memory aids were not permitted, which is why hrothgar and free decided only to partake "for fun". It doesn't make any sense to then allow a pair that is still in the competition to alert their own bids for partner to see!

I found at least one of the later-round alerts used by Tylere and Bid_em_up to be particularly questionable, but let's perhaps discuss that when the other pairs are done bidding and the hands are out in the open.

For the record, I also alerted one of my own bids last Thursday for the kibitzer's benefit. Justin immediately yelled: don't alert, I can see them!

I hope everybody agrees that alerts to partner should not be used, perhaps with an exception for jdonn.

I agree alerting should not happen at the contest. Consulting one's own convention card should not happen either! I have a strong feeling this wasn't well enough known among some, either.

This is of course just a "fun contest" but the rules were known ahead of time and for it to be fun and fair for everybody , the rules should be followed and anyne who sees them not followed, should say something. A pair who breaks them while knowing what the rules are, is c****ing.
