What card to play?

Recommended Posts

You hold T752 Q6542 4 J52 as West. North is dealer.

Auction:

(N) - Pard - (S) - You

P - 1C - 1H - P

2D - P - 3D - P

3NT all pass

Your lead agreements are

A = attitude

K = unblock or count

upside down count and attitude.

Partner leads the club K.

Dummy is KJ3 KJT97 AKT5 7.

What do you play?

If partner led the Q, what do you play?

If partner led the king asking for unblock, I would unblock! Yes it's possible he gambled with KQT8x on the king lead but that's on him, if I don't unblock when he asks for it I don't have the jack.

If partner led the queen asking for attitude I would play the 2 encouraging because I have the jack.

Both of these seem clear to me because I don't think I am allowed to use judgement in whether or not to unblock unless I can see 100 % that it will blow a trick (like 9xxx in dummy). Some judgement is allowed on my att signal but here I would definitely want to encourage clubs since I have nothing else and hope that we can do some good stuff in clubs.

Q1) Since partner has has led the K I am asked to either unblock or provide count since unblocking looks like it could easily cost a trick I give count, presumable the 5

Q2) You don't mention agreements on the lead of Q but standard is to unblock specifically the J if you have it and I would assume partner can stand that in the suit so I play the J.

actually the wording of the agreement for the lead of the K threw me as I usually use the reverse but in retrospect one of the A or K has to be "unblock, if you have nothing to unblock then give count" so my response to Q1 needs to be altered. BTW I thought the standard agreement with the Q lead was "if you have the J tell me NOW(by unblocking)"

If partner has the K Q T x x..... then standard is to lead the Q asking you to unblock the J .

not only are they not playing standard, but without the nine on this auction leading for unblock would not be wise with kqtxx.

I guess that brings us back to what Justin already said

Yes, play the J. I think unblocking with the 10 or higher and showing count otherwise is the correct way to play.

And don't be lazy with the A either! Partner might have led the K from KQT9xx and won't continue when you 'encourage'.

I don't understand this question unless it's to prove a crazy person wrong or settle a bet. Partner led the card that asks for an unblock if we have something to unblock, and we have something to unblock. Giving count would deny having something to unblock.

If he led the queen I would of course play the 2 to show I have the jack. Am I missing something?
