But pass, xxxx of clubs is really not good when partner isn't short (unless his hand is very bad)

But I sort of abstain, doesn't everyone open this? We open random 12 counts but pass this?

This is only 11HCP who cares if it is 5 controls and 3 quicktricks <_<

I don't have a problem with the initial pass. It's true that the four small clubs are bad, but I'd raise to game after a 1st or 2nd seat opening. Partner doesn't know that game will likely be cold if he has Ax of clubs.

After a fourth seat opener I'm passing.

I wait for partner to call - I'm assuming he's going to pass.

Oh, I'm in second seat? Partner knows I could have this hand? Pass - I made my decision on the first round. I found the SA after passing? Okay, maybe 4S.

What was I going to do when partner bid 4S? It's the same problem - he's never playing me for no spade losers and the HA.

4. Have to be practical sometimes. Or is it partner's responsibility to kick it in with Qxxxx, KQx, xxxx, x or Jxxxx, xx, AKxx, xx?

It's a vuln game, we just need thirtysomething percent.

Yes I want an undo lol. I was just bitter I hadn't opened I guess ;)

I did a couple of simulations. The first one got 65% 10 or more tricks. Then I redid it with opener holding the Q and at least 2 clubs (4 max.); of course it went down, 47% chances of game.

Both numbers are great for a game, even NV. Even with the adjustments a simulation will need (double dummy play) I think the reason for passing is more respect for partner than expectancy of making/going down. Sort of leading partner's suit when in doubt, am I right?

I really don't hope so, since that would be a horrible reason not to raise. We are not respecting partner when we are being blindly obedient to him, whatever the situation, but rather when we try to always make our best possible evaluations and act consequently on those. Partner can't see our cards for us, only we can.

And leading partner's suit 'when in doubt' is bad also. ;) Ok, I guess it depends on when we are in doubt. But leading partner's suit without really thinking is bad, at least.

I assume the sims were all of opening bids which did not , and should not, accept the 3C game try; yet they still made game about half the time. Also none of the decline hands can have a red-suit retry with a concentration there. Otherwise the sim only shows that game will make a lot of the time opposite an opening bid, and is meaningless.

If it makes so often when opener declines and also can't retry, I will rethink my position about not accepting my own game tries.
