1D - 2C - 3NT

Playing 2/1 game forcing, including 1D-Pass-2C,

1 - 2

3NT

What type of hand would bid 3NT at this point? Would a balanced 18-19 HCP hand bid 3NT or would it bid 2NT and plan on bidding 4NT quantitative over a 3NT bid by responder?

Note that this is a bit different than 1M-2m-2NT/3NT, especially if you are one to not always open 1NT (15-17) with a 5-card major.

For us, the 2NT rebid is pattern-specific; so 2NT, then 4NT with the 18-19. The pattern is exactly 4-4-3-2, in that order.

With 3-3-5-2, first priority is to rebid diamonds with weak NT strength, but with 18-19 the 3NT rebid gets both the size and the exact shape described.

Of course, none of the above will work if opener cannot raise clubs with 3 of them; so it won't be mainstream.

If you make a move toward slam, you'll find that partner has some random 12-14 balanced nonsense, "Haven't you head of Fast Arrival, p?" Probably the majority of players who purport to play 2/1 game force bid this way.

As to what it ought to be, I'd vote for 18-19 3343. (Most jumps to 3NT before partner has described his hand should be 4333's, definitely not 4432's.)

Do Rodwell and Grant cover this sequence in their 2/1 book?

As mentioned before, "fast arrival" pertains to when a suit fit has been established in an already game-forcing auction; a jump to game shows weakness for the previous bidding.

Jumps in NT before a fit is established are not treated as "fast arrival" minimum bids by most players. They show extra values.
