How should this be bid?

After two passes, East opens 2♥ (natural, weak). How should the auction proceed? Opponents are passing after the opening.

maybe x and then 3c by north which shows clubs and some values........2nt without values.

 

Now I would just rkc over 3c.

South starts with X. If North bids 3♣ (showing some value), it should be easy to reach 6♣. But playing MP, North probably would choose 2♠. Bidding might go: X 2♠ 3♥ 4♣ 4♥ 6♣.

3NT is indeed odd. If you cuebid 3♥ and partner does more than 3♠, doesn't that suit you just fine?

No? I mean it could work out fine to play a 4-3 spade fit or 4-4 minor suit fit at the 5 level, but with two balanced hands I'm sure I would rather play 3NT most of the time.

 

Plus the cuebid can be a wider range of hands but the double then 3NT clearly shows a flexible balanced hand of this range so at least I have described my hand.

I agree with JD. X 2S 3NT followed by 4C

You may not get there. The DJ in the Nth hand is a super card and Nth would bid the same way without it.

Fair enough. If I can count on LHO not to have the 3rd heart (no raise over my initial X), 3NT would be very appealing.

If you start with 2 Spade, you will just have a 4-3 fit. Obvious....

I don't want to start with clubs but I think this hand may be worth 3♠ after a double.

That would make bidding kinda difficult.

Wow I think 3N over 2S is atrocious (sry jdonn ;)), I would always bid 3H (and if partner bids 3S I would bid 3N, if he bids anything else I'd be very happy). Partner will know to convert even with 5 bad spades after the 3H then 3N sequence.
