How should this be bid?

X 2

3NT 4

then I don't know for sure either how it should go exactly or where it will end up, but south will push at least.

3NT instead of a cuebid does look a bit odd but the cuebid would endplay north if he had four spades with too much to just rebid 3 but no heart stopper.

3NT is indeed odd. If you cuebid 3 and partner does more than 3, doesn't that suit you just fine?

No? I mean it could work out fine to play a 4-3 spade fit or 4-4 minor suit fit at the 5 level, but with two balanced hands I'm sure I would rather play 3NT most of the time.

Plus the cuebid can be a wider range of hands but the double then 3NT clearly shows a flexible balanced hand of this range so at least I have described my hand.

Fair enough. If I can count on LHO not to have the 3rd heart (no raise over my initial X), 3NT would be very appealing.

Why are there even mentions of north starting with 3? At any form of scoring?

Because you have a 5-4 fit there of course, don't you see it?

If you start with 2 Spade, you will just have a 4-3 fit. Obvious....

;)
