fuburules3
Sitting south holding [hv=d=n&v=n&s=sxxxhak10xxdxxckxx]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv] Bidding goes 1♥-1♠-2♠-3♠-4♥-4♠-? What do you bid? If pass what would have to change to X? If X, is partner allowed to pull or is this binding?
655321
1♥ (1♠) 2♠ (3♠);4♥ (4♠) ? I would bid 5♥. We have a 5th heart, and 3 small spades. Partner has at most one spade. If we had a spade card double would be more attractive. With spade shortage we might want to pass 4♠ around to partner instead, although this would not be a forcing pass for me. nigel_k
Pass, not forcing. It's quite unlikely partner has a doubleton spade, but even assuming he has a singleton 4♠ and 5♥ will both be down a lot of the time. I don't mind if he passes, doubles, or bids 5♥ and have no strong opinion myself about which will work best. I don't mind 5♥ but I wouldn't double with a hand like this and would expect partner to pass the double unless he has a spade void or otherwise unusual shape. Phil
Automatic 5♥. We aren't in a FP either.

bluecalm
Automatic 5♥. We aren't in a FP either. Yes, assuming standard meaning of 2♠ (limit+) we are not in FP.This is why many players incorporate different bids for exactly limit and gf. Some of them add a bid for mixed raise too.The thing is that if you play standard 2/1 in competition is forcing one round, so: 1♥ - 1♠ -3♣/3♦/3♥ might all be used for different purposes. One scheme could be:2♠ = limit raise3♣ = game forcing raise3♦ = mixed raise3♥ = purely preemptive This is one area of bidding where I think standard shines comparing to what I like to play (NFB's so jumps have to be natural and strong). Codo
Not a FP situation. I would pass, wrong vul. and horrible shape for 5 ♥.
hanp
Agree with Phil, this is not a forcing pass situation and pass is horrible.
ahydra
Hmm, partner opened and rebid 4♥ - depends on agreements I guess (4♥ should probably just be competitive here), but are we 100% sure we're not beating 4♠? I guess there is a high probability of an opp holding a heart void - in which case it may be best to bid 5♥ - but that'd be a complete disaster at MP if we can take 1 heart, the ♦AK or AQ in partner's hand (he needs something for the opening bid!) and the ♣K, for example. [Then again, we may well make 5♥ in that case] But for the same reason, double is too risky. Maybe this is one of those hands where whatever you do, it'll be wrong :/ ahydra
