Weak jump shifts are in vogue

Weak jump shifts in majors after 1m opening are very in vogue, and spreading like a rash in our local clubs.

 

Most seem to be playing them as

 

(1m) P (2M) = 6+ M and 0-5 points

 

Although others play 2-5 points, or sometimes a little stronger.

 

 

I usually feel cheated in 4th seat. We probably have balance of points, but partner maybe weak or have balanced hand if they are silent over 1m.

 

Obviously 4th hand can X for takeout, but are there more sophisticated methods on the market that you can share with me?

3m=natural

3M=stop ask, probably you have the other minor and a goodish hand

First and VERY important: DO NOT FEEL CHEATED.

 

If a bid is legal, they used it to reach the best score for their side. If they succeed, you will have the worst score. THis is their goal, so everything legal they do is NOT cheating.

 

The best defence against 1 m (pass) 2 M (weak) is normal bridge.

Bid your long suits.

Bid X for take out.

Discusss whether 2 Nt is natural or a more distributional take out.

Thank you. I wasn't suggesting our opponents are cheating. As you say they are entitled (and we use this bid too :)).

 

We like using it as it often wins the auction "battle" :), but it is extremely annoying when our opponents WJS as it makes life difficult for us. :D How dare they? :ph34r:

(1m) P (2M) 3M asking advancer to bid 3N with a stop

(P)

 

What does advancer do when they don't have a stop?

 

 

Does next suit deny thus allowing partner to bid his suit at lowest level, or should all bids from advancer be natural?

Bid something that ain't 3NT.

If you bid

1 m (2M) 3M

 

you need to know what to do next, so you need special hands for this bid.

But if you bid the cue, you have a special hand already.

 

You did not bid an own suit.

You did not raise partner.

You did not double to show the other major (or the other two suits for some)

You did not pass, waiting for a penalty double.

You did not bid NT yourself.

 

So you must have a hand with enough points for game and some length in all suits.

So, you nearly never have problems after any given bid from partner.
