Opponents do not bid. Note to richard, yes this is a misery hand. [/hv]

Six spades is a great contract, but runs a greater risk of a diamond ruff. Six notrump (even 4NT) has little play. Snce so many bid 6D, the scoring for it is lower than 10.

6d=8, 6S=7, 5S=3, 5D=1

Sort of funny observation on this board...

If most of the field is in 6/6, then 6 should be the top spot. For example, with the actual contracts 6 will score 11.5 or 12.5 depending on whether 6 makes, whereas 6 will score 20 if it makes and 1.5 if it doesn't. Since 6 will make a lot more than half the time, this would give it the top spot.

If a substantial portion of the field is in game only, then 6 will beat 6 handily.

Mad at myself too. But yes. It probably cost me advancing!

What did it do?

1 1

3 3

3NT 6!

You can figure out what happened from there lol. I take the blame for guessing to bid a grand and being wrong (I didn't think he'd be off 3 aces and KQJ of trumps for his bid), but if only there were a way to find out if we were off an ace.... I have to work very hard in this partnership to keep up with the pairs who play blackwood :P

I think we had a good auction here.

1H - 1S

3D - 3S

3NT - 4D

5C - 5NT

6D

4H or 4S instead of 5C would have been a suggestion. 5NT was pick a slam, and 6D was Justin's pick. I would have been very happy with this auction if only I had passed. Unfortunately I inexplicably changed my mind and bid 6NT.

There was some lively discussion on the way to the lake about my 5C bid. A couple felt that it was obvious to bid keycard with my hand.

My reason for not bidding keycard was that you could be 5-4 with KQ(J) A in the pointeds, and on the obvious club lead slam is quite poor then. Also note that 5D>3N opposite that hand, so it's not like I need to panic that we passed 3N.

Some people bought that argument but felt I should bid 4H cuebid to leave open the possibility of you bidding keycard, or 4S over which I could now bid keycard. My reason for not doing that was I was unclear if 4H could ever be an offer to play.

It seemed to me at the time like I could have 6 hearts still, specifically 0643 with a double club stopper, or 1642 with a double club stopper. You could also bid KQJxx xx Axxx xx this way I think (though maybe 3H is right, bidding 3S can't be that far off), or we could simply belong in a 6-1 heart fit more than 5D at MP.

After discussing it though it seems like 4H would be much better as a cue and I was just being a little paranoid. At the end of the day I preferred not to be ambiguous though, and 5C got across the message that I had slam interest in diamonds with a club control and it seemed unlikely you'd play me to be denying a heart control! I still think just blasting keycard is too much though.

Yeah when you bid 5C I knew why you didn't bid 4H. I was planning to pass whatever you would bid over 5NT, but then I started to reconsider (6D was too straightforward, it couldn't be right!) and was leaning towards 6S to give you the choice between 6S and 6NT. Then I thought about some hands with AQ of clubs where 6NT was better and I thought you wouldn't be able to bid it. Very frustrating set of hands!
