I can't see any harm in 4, if it shows a good raise - if partner moves past 4 without any top card in the black suits, everything else about his hand will be perfect.

I also don't think it's very likely to gain. Say he has Qxx AKQJxxx x xx, where slam is excellent. Will he do more than bid 4?

maybe pard has only 5 hearts???

Anyway, 3 for me, then if pard bids

- 3NT: pass or eventually raise to 4NT if feeling luck

- 4: pass or raise to 5 if you play it shows wide open diamonds

- spade raise bid: pass/sign off in 4

Doesn't stop you from playing in a shaky fit if pard has 3 spades, but seems more flexible than commiting to 4.

Perhaps overcall 4 instead of that wimpy 3? :D Still, even having bid 3 I think that's worth a final push in 5.

call me a pervert but i want to try 3s, not because i want to play in spades but because i want to see partner pattern out.

we could be going off in 4H with 6C cold

if partner raises i won't be cacking myself - we'll be getting tapped in the right hand at least.

You probably just forgot that option, but anyway, if partner bids 4 to your 3 you have to try 4 instead of sing off in 4. It will hardly be worse.
