If you pass what do you do with the hand improved by J♦ ?

gnasher
At any form of scoring I'd pass and wait for partner to make a takeout double. If he makes one, I take it out; if he doesn't, maybe defending 2♠ will be OK. I expect partner to double with any 2(434) except a minimum with spade wastage, but that style may not be universal). A problem with this approach is that partner may not act with a 2(335) shape, fearing a matching 3(442). With ♦J as well, I'd still pass at matchpoints. At IMPs, assuming 1NT is really 15-17, I'd bid 3NT.

Phil
Old guy answer: double=cards. I have cards and double. Not quite so old guy answer - double is TO and I don't relish putting this hand down in 3♦ or 3♥. I'll pass and see what pard does.
doclands
I dble = any game try - or a hand I don't know what to do on lol (plus I play Lebensohl). Nothing is perfect but I prefer to eliminate as many guessing situations as possible. John Armstrong used to say, get your own hands sorted out first and use anything left to try and get a penalty - but there's usually not much left lol. I guess you are gambling that people will go down in 3N and you will go plus in whatever but it seems like a big view. It probably depends on who RHO is a lot. NINE POINTS! HIGH CARDS IN MY SHORT SUITS! NOT ENOUGH POINTS FOR GAME? MISPLACED SPADE HONOURS? BAD BREAKS? All in all, 3NT seems more likely to go down than to make. That would make pass a good bet rather than a gamble.
