babalu1997
playing with an apparent better than avergae player, the bidding goes 1diamond by opp- takeout dbl by partner i held [hv=s=sxhkqxdjxxcajtxxx]133|100|[/hv] i responded 3 clubs the guy now bids 3 spades and suddenly i no longer like my hand under standard methods, i thought that 3 sapdes shows a 16+hcp hand with 6 spades, i considered bidding 4 spades, but i passed because i wondered where his 16 hcp might be coming from turned out the guy had about 13 hcp, four spades to ak, and 3 clubs to kq we had a fair chance of making 5 clubs my question is 1) is 3 spades forcing on me? Could it be that after a jump bid 3 spades is a control bid instead? 2) isn't it hoggish of the fella to ask me to bid my suit and then beat his chest over 4 spade trumps? 3) if he was going to bid a 4 card sapdes suit, why not just ovecall it one time? thanks
TylerE
Forcing, and your partner is an idiot.
Stephen Tu
turned out the guy had about 13 hcp, four spades to ak, and 3 clubs to kq we had a fair chance of making 5 clubs??? It seems you have 0 chance of making 5 clubs? Don't you lose minimum 1 heart 2 diamonds? Anyway 3 spades shows around 18+ points but only promises FIVE spades. It is definitely forcing. Double then bid a new suit is logically forcing opposite a partner who showed strength opposite takeout double (jump response, or freely bid after RHO bid something other than rdbl). Not forcing if your bid could be very weak (e.g. 2c non-jump after RHO pass). You really can't pass, partner is supposed to have something like AKQTx AJxx x Kxx where 5c is just cold and 6 has chances. Just rebid your clubs, with a diamond stop you'd try 3nt. Actual partner is clueless, of course.

Vuroth and Tyler, also ---but they were less articulate :) Double, then new suit=too big to overcall and doubt about whether the new suit should actually be trumps; often only five of them. Not forcing, unless advancer has shown values. In this case, advancer has shown values. values+ too big to overcall=at least game.
P_Marlowe
#1 Yes#2 ..., most likely 3D would have been the better call, asking for a stopper, the 3C bid did not imply a 5 carder, but 3S would for most#3 who knowes? With kind regardsMarlowe
